Description
An aristocrat named Ashath Fornerux is the sole survivor of a battle that wiped out his entire military unit. Burdened by disgrace and overwhelming guilt for being the only one left alive, he is exiled to a remote outpost known as the Far Frontier. There he is assigned to serve among the Guardians of the outer shell, a quiet and largely ceremonial security force for the elite stationed far beyond the castle walls.

The setting is a desolate and wild borderland, home to a castle base where Ashath meets his new comrades: three women named Ishne, Lara, and Shishiha, and a foul-mouthed but gifted sorcerer named Durant. Though the post involves little more than idle patrols, Ashath finds himself tormented by relentless nightmares of the battle that claimed his men. Durant uses his magic to remove the nightmares from Ashath, and despite his sharp tongue and prickly demeanor, his clumsy kindness begins to reach the troubled aristocrat.

The narrative arc follows the growing bond between Ashath and Durant. During a patrol to rescue a girl abducted by bandits, the Guardians encounter a monstrous creature. Durant defeats the beast but not before Ashath is injured, an event that breaks the ice between them. Ashath opens up about his past, while learning the extraordinary secrets of the three female Guardians and that Durant was rescued from the gutters as a child by his mentor. As Ashath gradually relaxes around his new comrades, he confesses to Durant, I think Ive fallen for you.

An invitation arrives from the rescued girl, Lady Gitelle Royle, to a ball. Durant initially refuses, unable to dance, but Ashath offers to teach him. At the ball, word spreads among the aristocratic guests that Ashath is the officer responsible for his mens deaths. Gitelle shows interest in Durant and mentions Ashaths guilt, but Durant staunchly defends him. Later, on a balcony, Ashath tells Durant, More than anything, I want to be where you are, and kisses him.

Both men, however, conceal secrets from each other. Durant has never told Ashath the sad truth behind his own banishment to the frontier. And Ashath finally reveals the true reason his family sent him on that disastrous mission: he is living on borrowed time, and it may already be too late to save him.
