Description
Navier Ellie Trovi has been the perfect Empress of the Eastern Empire since childhood, ruling alongside her husband Emperor Sovieshu with cold efficiency and mutual respect, though their marriage is one of duty rather than passion. Their carefully balanced arrangement shatters when Sovieshu brings a young former slave named Rashta into the palace as his concubine, intending for her to bear him an heir since Navier has been unable to conceive. As Rashta gains the emperor's affection and influence, Sovieshu increasingly neglects and humiliates Navier, eventually demanding a divorce so he can raise his mistress to the throne. Rather than crumbling, the dignified Empress agrees on one condition, that she be granted permission to remarry immediately. Her chosen groom is Prince Heinley of the rival Western Kingdom, a charming and enigmatic royal who has secretly admired Navier from afar, often visiting the Eastern Empire's palace in the form of a bird he can magically transform into. The story follows Navier as she navigates the treacherous politics of divorce, enters a new marriage built on genuine respect and growing affection, watches Sovieshu face the disastrous consequences of elevating the scheming and increasingly unstable Rashta to Empress, and ultimately claims her own happiness and power in a foreign court. Notable narrative arcs include the divorce proceedings where Navier shocks the entire empire, Rashta's desperate attempts to hide her past as a runaway slave while sabotaging her rivals, Sovieshu's realization that he has destroyed his alliance with Navier for a woman who never truly loved him, Heinley's protective and devoted courtship of his new Empress, and Navier's transformation from the restrained, perfectly composed Eastern Empress to a woman who finally allows herself to feel passion and love as the Queen of the Western Kingdom. The setting spans the opulent Eastern Empire with its rigid hierarchy and magic academy, as well as the culturally distinct Western Kingdom where Navier finds her second chance.
