Description
In No Gyaru in This Class, a diligent honor student named Mirei Nanase has long admired the flashy and fashionable gyaru lifestyle she reads about in manga. Determined to reinvent herself, she decides to undergo a complete makeover before entering high school, hoping to finally make friends and experience the vibrant youth she has always dreamed of. The setting is a typical Japanese high school, where Mirei quickly discovers she is not alone in her desire for change. She meets Yushin Mamiya, a boy who has also remade his image to appear like a rough-edged Yankee or rebel, despite his naturally soft and intellectual personality. The conflict and comedy arise not from dramatic confrontation, but from the gentle awkwardness of these two freshly minted personalities learning to connect. They quickly hit it off, forming the nucleus of a new friend group. A third central character, Subaru Raisaka, joins them; she was previously a tomboyish athletic prodigy but has also transformed into a flashy, stylish, yet taciturn gyaru. The early narrative arcs focus on the trio navigating their first year of high school. The storyline is a slice-of-life romantic comedy that thrives on subtle growth and the joys of everyday youth rather than heavy melodrama. The central theme revolves around change—altering looks, personalities, and outlooks—as these characters realize they were all once unpopular or isolated in middle school: Mirei was a studious loner, Yushin a similar nerd, and Subaru solely dedicated to sports. Their friendship feels organic, developing at a steady and believable pace as they bond over their shared pasts and their new, brighter futures.
