Description
Fringe-Man follows a self-proclaimed mistress-making expert known as the Love Mistress Professor who teaches his unconventional methods to ordinary men desperate for extramarital affairs. Protagonist Masumi Ibuse is a seasoned veteran in the art of keeping mistresses, and he takes on three struggling pupils: Tasai, a timid salaryman who fears being disliked by anyone; Mitsushima, a pure-hearted baseball enthusiast incapable of reading social situations; and Ango, a bachelor and avid film fan who joins the affair-seeking alliance despite being single. The story unfolds as this mismatched group navigates the professor’s questionable techniques, which draw inspiration from action movies and comedic hypotheticals rather than realistic advice. Set in contemporary Japan, the narrative follows their misadventures through the collision between the professor’s cynical expertise and the bumbling incompetence of his students. Notable arcs include the formation of the affair alliance, the application of film-inspired seduction tactics that inevitably backfire, and the gradual revelation of how each character’s personality flaws sabotage their own goals. The comedic tone persists throughout as the professor’s students repeatedly fail to replicate his methods, leading to increasingly absurd situations. The work ran as a serialized manga in Weekly Young Magazine, spanning a complete narrative across its publication history.
