Description
Sometimes even the greatest kaiju-fighting heroes need a day off. With the highest kaiju-emergence rates in the world, Japan is no stranger to attack by deadly monsters. But kaiju do not attack every day. Sometimes, even the best and brightest fighters of the Third Division of the Japan Defense Force, a military organization tasked with the neutralization of kaiju, get a chance to relax.
This spin-off manga shifts the focus from high-stakes battles against giant monsters to the quieter, humorous, and slice-of-life moments of the Third Division during their downtime. The story is episodic, featuring short vignettes that explore the personalities and quirks of beloved characters away from the chaos of their official duties.
The main cast from the original series returns in these off-duty scenarios. Kafka Hibino, a former cleaning crew worker who can transform into a kaiju himself, attempts to find inner peace through meditation, only to end up baring something else entirely. The stoic and powerful Captain Mina Ashiro is shown blowing off steam at a local arcade, where her combat skills translate surprisingly well to zombie-hunting games. Reno Ichikawa, the serious and level-headed cadet, must confront an unexpected and intense fear of ghosts. A curious challenge arises when a cadet sets out to glimpse Vice-Captain Soshiro Hoshina's eyes, a quest that uncovers a sweet surprise rather than a fearsome glare. Meanwhile, the prodigy Kikoru Shinomiya, known for her fierce combat abilities, finally gets to spend time with her friends in a more casual setting.
The first volume presents several distinct narrative arcs, each focusing on a different character or pair of characters. One story follows Kafka, Reno, and Kikoru on a hiking trip where a venomous snake bite forces Kafka to use his kaiju powers to survive, much to a surprisingly unfazed Kikoru's interest. Another chapter explores Kafka attempting to bare his soul through meditation, with comedic results. Mina Ashiro's arcade adventure shows her competitive nature and love for cats, while other segments reveal unexpected hobbies of the higher-ups, such as Director General Isao Shinomiya and Deputy Director Itami proving to be Dance Dance Revolution masters. The narrative weaves these lighthearted, comedic scenarios together, offering a palate cleanser from the main series' intense action and focusing purely on character interactions and humor as the heroes decompress from their dangerous jobs.
