Tsumugu, the son of an embroidery shop owner, helps his grandfather run the shop. One day he encounters Gina, a foreign transfer student with a passion for Japanese kanji and yakuza films. Dressed in a biker gang jacket, Gina offers Tsumugu a large sum of money to embroider kanji characters onto her jacket. What seems like a simple job soon forces Tsumugu to confront the hidden meanings behind everyday words—such as the kanji for "bonds" and "happiness," which may have surprisingly brutal origins. As Gina shares her deep love for written characters, Tsumugu begins to see signs, placards, place names, and even people’s names in a new light. His growing awareness of the true nature of kanji unravels his previously casual attitude toward language. Meanwhile, his budding relationship with Gina, the threads of a faltering youth, and tangled romantic feelings all begin to move forward, much like the needle of a sewing machine.
