Zoccha is a white-and-orange male cat living with a young couple in an apartment. Despite being free to roam outdoors, he leads a lazy, carefree life, often daydreaming about love and food. His name was inspired by a television commercial his owner’s husband saw while on a business trip. Zoccha is timid by nature but deeply affectionate, and he frequently finds himself smitten with various female cats in the neighborhood, such as the nearby pet cat Torako and a stray named Ellie. His romantic pursuits, however, never quite succeed.

The story begins when the husband brings Zoccha home as a third-anniversary gift for his wife, who initially dislikes animals. Over time, she grows accustomed to him and accepts him as part of the family, though her handling remains rough and casual. After a move to a new home where Zoccha is forbidden from going outside, he plots escape attempts. Later, circumstances lead to a change in owners: Zoccha comes to live with Mayaa Toyoshima, a seventeen-year-old manga artist. Their relationship starts off rocky, as Mayaa knows little about cats, but they gradually form a grudging bond.

Zoccha’s daily life is filled with small adventures and mishaps. He develops a taste for human food, especially cheese-baked horse mackerel, and his diet consists mainly of dry food supplemented by fish, meat, rice, and even cake. He experiences a terrifying hospitalization, makes friends with a lookalike cat named John-Ta after being kidnapped, and embarks on a journey to find an old woman who once cared for John-Ta. At one point, Zoccha is wrongfully accused of stealing food and runs away to a ranch, where he learns to live outdoors before eventually returning home. Later, he starts a morning walking routine to maintain the fitness he gained at the ranch, only to repeatedly encounter the veterinarian he fears.

Throughout the series, Zoccha encounters a variety of humans and animals, each encounter shaping his understanding of the world. The narrative follows his quiet, often humorous observations and his earnest, sometimes clumsy attempts to navigate love, friendship, and everyday challenges. The setting shifts between the couple’s apartment, Mayaa’s home, a ranch, and other locations, grounding the story in a slice-of-life atmosphere that highlights the bond between a cat and his humans.
