Description
Ordinary high school girl Fuka Arashiyama mistakes a trading card game store for a secondhand bookstore and steps inside by chance. There she runs into her classmate Hidetsugu Kaen, a passionate and notoriously sharp-tongued card gamer who immediately pulls her into a match of the fictional game Alchemic Versus. Having never been truly enthusiastic about anything before, Fuka surprises herself by developing a natural aptitude for the game and gradually becomes fascinated by its depth and the community around it.
Soon Fuka is drawn into a circle of fellow female card gamers: the caring but obsessive fan-deck builder Sanae Domon, and the elegant heiress Minamo Takigawa, who hides a fierce competitive streak behind her polite demeanor. Together the four form Team Elements and set their sights on entering official tournaments. Their days are filled with deck building, strategy talks, and trips to local card shops, but also with the less glamorous realities of the hobby, including trash talk, bad beats, and the constant struggle to justify spending money on rare cards. The series treats these moments with a comedic, affectionate eye, celebrating the quirks of card game culture while never glossing over its more ridiculous or unsavory sides.
A major narrative arc begins when a masked assailant known as the Phantom starts attacking card gamers in the Sendai area, targeting members of the local group the Kenou Renkin Doumei. Around the same time, a transfer student named Krone joins Fuka and Kaen's class and quickly becomes friends with the team. Her true identity as the Phantom is eventually exposed, and it is revealed that her actions stem from a painful personal history. The arc culminates in a high-stakes card duel between Kaen and Krone that forces both girls to confront their motivations and the meaning of their bonds with others. Through these events, the manga explores themes of friendship, rivalry, and the search for a place to belong, all while maintaining its humorous, slice-of-life tone.
