Takayuki Sugo
Description
Takayuki Sugo is a Japanese voice actor and stage actor born on August 1, 1952, in Chiba Prefecture. He is affiliated with the theater company Bungakuza, which he joined after a period of study at its associated institute beginning in 1974, becoming a full company member in 1979. His career is rooted in stage and television acting, with voice work for anime and foreign film dubs forming a significant part of his professional output.
Sugo's path to voice acting was indirect, stemming from his foundational work in theater. He initially trained and performed in stage productions, an experience that grounded his performance style. His entry into voice work began with live broadcast commentary for films, and he gradually took on more roles in this field. He has noted that he initially maintained a distance from anime but eventually embraced it, citing his role as one of the main characters in the 2002 series Heat Guy J as the point where he began to feel truly comfortable with the medium.
In addition to his anime roles, Sugo is highly active in the field of foreign film and series dubbing, where he is the regular Japanese voice for actors such as Al Pacino, Jean Reno, Tommy Lee Jones, and Hugo Weaving. His approach to voice acting is to perform the roles as offered, focusing on the work itself.
Sugo has portrayed a wide array of characters across numerous anime series, often lending his gravitas to authoritative, powerful, or elder figures. He has voiced Yhwach, the primary antagonist, in Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, a role connected to his earlier performance as Ichigo's zanpakutō spirit, Zangetsu, in the original Bleach series. In historical epics, he has played King Sweyn in Vinland Saga and Shinpachi Nagakura in Golden Kamuy. His filmography includes roles such as Bowman in Spriggan, Hagar in The Genius Prince's Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt, and The Dragon in the series Dragon's Dogma. He is also a recurring presence in the Baki franchise, providing the voice for the formidable karate master Doppo Orochi. Other notable credits include Steven Martland in Hero Mask, Riku Yuuki in The Silver Guardian 2, The One in The Empire of Corpses, Ziva in Lupin III: Princess of the breeze, Kiichi Inukai in Musashi: The Dream of the Last Samurai, Dusk in Birdy the Mighty Decode:02, and the iconic role of Wanyuudou, the talking wheeled charm, across the Hell Girl series. His long and varied career also features parts in Heat Guy J as J, The Raven in Princess Tutu, Morikiyo Ideura in Shinshaku Sengoku Eiyū Densetsu - Sanada Jū Yūshi The Animation, Tokugawa Ieyasu in Gifū Dōdō!!
