Richard Ian Cox is a Welsh-born Canadian actor widely recognized for his extensive career in voice acting, particularly for English-language dubs of anime series. Born in St. Asaph, Wales, he began acting at the age of nine and moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, during his youth, becoming a professional actor by age fourteen. He is a graduate of Richmond Secondary School in Vancouver.
Cox's career encompasses both live-action and voice-over roles. He gained early prominence in live-action television with a co-starring role as Alec Ramsay in The Family Channel's series The Adventures of the Black Stallion during the early 1990s, acting opposite Mickey Rooney. He has also appeared in guest roles in numerous television series, including Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, Psych, and The Outer Limits, as well as the feature film RV starring Robin Williams.
In the realm of anime voice acting, he is most renowned for his portrayal of the title character in the long-running series InuYasha, based on the manga by Rumiko Takahashi. He reprised this iconic role for all subsequent InuYasha media, including its sequel series Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon and Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon - The Second Act, as well as the series of InuYasha feature films and video games. This role remains a defining performance of his career.
Another significant anime role early in his career was voicing the male Ranma Saotome in the later seasons of another Rumiko Takahashi adaptation, Ranma ½. His other prominent anime voice credits include Bit Cloud in Zoids: New Century Zero, Kai Shiden in various Mobile Suit Gundam productions including the original Mobile Suit Gundam, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, and the Dynasty Warriors: Gundam video game series.
