Description
Orphen is the main protagonist of the anime Sorcerous Stabber Orphen: Revenge. He is a young man of about twenty years with brown hair and brown eyes, and he is usually seen wearing a signature red headband and biker-style clothing. His birth name is Krylancelo Finrandi, and he was once one of the most promising black sorcerers at the Tower of Fangs, an institution where young people believed to possess strong magical power were trained. He and his older sister Azalie were brought to the school because both were thought to have exceptional magical ability, and Orphen proved to be a prodigy, advancing quickly among the institution's most gifted students.
Five years before the events of the series, Azalie was transformed into a dragon-like monster known as Bloody August, and Orphen left the Tower of Fangs to search for her. His central motivation is to restore her to her human form, and he is willing to go to great lengths for her sake. This devotion comes from their shared past, since Azalie tutored him when they were younger and gave him the confidence to succeed at the Tower of Fangs. For much of the series, he keeps his feelings and the story of Azalie to himself, but he gradually opens up to those around him as the journey continues.
In terms of personality, Orphen often projects a careless and lighthearted manner that can seem lazy, and he comes across as cold and detached toward people he does not know well. He is arrogant, blunt, and short-tempered, and he has a nearly obsessive drive to finish whatever task he is working on as quickly as possible, which sometimes leads him to avoid helping people he feels are not his responsibility. Beneath that gruff exterior, he is a focused and self-reliant person who knows his own strength and ultimately uses his abilities in service of a greater cause. Although he frequently acts dismissive and sarcastic, he shows a far more caring and protective side toward the people he trusts.
His role in the story is that of the central hero. In the commercial city of Totokanta, he had been working as a money lender in the back streets, but his relatively quiet life ends when he finally encounters the monstrous form of Azalie. He then sets out on a journey to obtain the Sword of Baltanders, a weapon he believes is needed to save his sister, and he is joined along the way by a group of companions. These include Majic, a young apprentice who looks up to him, the clumsy schemers Volkan and Dortin, and Cleao Everlasting, a headstrong young swordswoman who accompanies him because the sword he seeks belongs to her family. His bonds with these characters form the emotional center of his travels, and his interactions with them reveal a more human side beneath his rough manner. He also remains connected to his past through people from the Tower of Fangs, such as Hartia, Childman, and Flameheart, who still address him by his original name, Krylancelo Finrandi.
As a sorcerer, Orphen is exceptionally gifted. He was identified early as having unusually strong magical power and became a highly skilled black sorcerer capable of casting a wide range of offensive and defensive spells. He is also competent with a blade and wields the Sword of Baltanders once he acquires it. Over the course of the story, his abilities continue to grow, and he is recognized as one of the most powerful sorcerers in the world. His combination of immense magical talent, sharp instincts, and stubborn determination to save his sister defines him as a formidable and persistent hero.
