Description
Kagura is a demon and a secondary antagonist who appears in InuYasha: The Final Act. She is known as the wind sorceress and is one of several detachments, or incarnations, created by the primary antagonist Naraku. As his creation, Kagura is bound to his will because he holds her actual heart, giving him absolute control over her life and forcing her compliance through the threat of death.
Physically, Kagura takes the form of a young woman with black hair tied up using feathers, which she can enlarge to use for flight. She has red eyes and typically wears a traditional Japanese kimono and carries a folding fan, which she uses as both a tool and a weapon for her wind-based abilities. Her appearance gives her an elegant, almost dancer-like quality, which is reflected in the names of her attacks.
Despite being an agent of Naraku's evil, Kagura deeply resents her creator and the hold he has over her. Her primary motivation throughout the story is to gain her freedom, a desire that defines nearly every action she takes. She is proud and slightly arrogant, often making sharp-tongued remarks about her situation or the people she encounters. Because she is forced to carry out Naraku's cruel orders, she is often positioned as an enemy to the protagonists, but she secretly hopes for Naraku's destruction. Her ultimate goal is not the Shikon Jewel or power but simply to be free and live as she chooses, like the wind she commands.
In the narrative, Kagura operates as a secretive double agent. She is compelled to fight Inuyasha and his friends, but she also covertly assists them and other characters in ways that undermine Naraku. For example, she discovers a critical weakness of Inuyasha but deliberately conceals this information from her master to keep him alive as a potential threat to Naraku. She is initially introduced as an antagonist, but her role evolves significantly as her open defiance of Naraku grows.
Kagura has several key relationships that shape her path. Her relationship with Naraku is one of master and enslaved creation, built on fear and hatred. She is sometimes called the sister of Kanna, another of Naraku's detachments, though the two operate largely independently. While working against Naraku, she forms complex bonds with other characters. She shows increasing admiration for the powerful demon Sesshomaru, believing he is the only one with the strength to ultimately kill Naraku. To this end, she provides him with valuable information and tools, such as a crystal that can help him track their enemy. Her feelings for him deepen over time, moving from pragmatic alliance to a more personal affection she does not openly express. Furthermore, she develops a protective relationship with the young demon slayer Kohaku after learning he has regained his memories. Both are trapped by Naraku, and Kagura actively works to protect Kohaku, even when it puts her own life at greater risk.
Kagura possesses a variety of formidable abilities tied to wind and her fan. Her techniques are often named as dances. Fūjin no Mai, or Dance of the Wind Blades, allows her to create powerful, sharp wind blades that can cut through multiple enemies. Ryūja no Mai, or Dance of the Dragon Snakes, summons tornados in the shape of dragons to attack and trap foes. Shikabane no Mai, or Dance of the Dead, lets her animate corpses to do her bidding. She can also suppress the formation of the Wind Scar, one of Inuyasha's most powerful attacks, creating an additional challenge for him. For mobility, her most distinctive ability is to enlarge the feathers in her hair and ride on them, flying through the air wherever the wind takes her.
Throughout InuYasha: The Final Act, Kagura undergoes a tragic but meaningful development. She moves from a coerced servant to an active rebel, making her final bid for freedom even though she knows it will likely cost her life. When she finally defies Naraku too openly by helping Kohaku escape, Naraku decides to punish her. He returns her heart, granting her the freedom she always wanted, but immediately impales her with his poisonous miasma, leaving her to die slowly. As she lies dying alone in a field of flowers, Sesshomaru finds her, having followed her scent. He attempts to save her with his sword Tenseiga, but it is unable to reverse her fate. In her final moments, she expresses no anger or sorrow, simply happiness that she got to see him and a sense of peace that she is finally free. Her body disintegrates, turning into a gust of wind, and the last thing Sesshomaru and the arriving Inuyasha group see is her smiling face before she dissipates forever. Her death is a pivotal moment, representing the tragic cost of seeking freedom and solidifying her as one of the series' most memorable and sympathetic characters.
