Description
Moondoggie, whose legal name is James Darren Emerson, is a supporting character in the anime Eureka Seven. He is a member of the renegade group Gekkostate, serving initially as the operator of the Light Finding Operation, or LFO, catapult systems and launch pads aboard the group's aircraft, the Gekko. Later in the series, he becomes the head pilot of the Gekko, replacing Talho when she leaves that post, as he is the group's only other licensed pilot. His nickname is often shortened to Doggie by other crew members, and the main protagonist, Renton Thurston, sometimes refers to him as Doggie-niisan, meaning Brother Doggie, a term Moondoggie initially resists.
Moondoggie is one of the youngest members of Gekkostate and was the newest crewman before Renton joined. His personality is often characterized as laid-back, and he shares a bond with Renton over their youth and a mutual interest in surfing, a sport that involves riding air currents using special boards. He also tends to show a lack of confidence, sometimes viewing himself as inferior when comparing himself to other members of the group. He presents a front of disliking Renton at first, but this stems from jealousy, as he is no longer the newest member and feels his place in the group is being challenged. Despite this, he develops a genuine fraternal bond with Renton as the series progresses.
Moondoggie's motivations are tied to his loyalty to Gekkostate and his desire to prove his worth. He gets along with others on the crew, including his girlfriend, Gidget, the group's communications operator, though he is initially clueless about her romantic interest in him. His key relationships include his close friendship with Renton and his romantic involvement with Gidget. His role in the story evolves from a minor duty on the ship to a more critical position as a pilot. Towards the end of the series, his role becomes more minimal, and he is primarily featured piloting the Gekko, often performing dramatic and complex maneuvers to avoid attacks, suggesting he is a highly skilled pilot. In terms of development, he matures from a somewhat insecure and jealous younger member into a capable and reliable pilot for the team. His notable abilities include his proficiency as a pilot, his mechanical knowledge, and his skill as a surfer.
