Description
Abel Nightroad presents a stark duality, appearing on the surface as a hapless and clumsy Catholic priest while secretly being an ancient and immensely powerful being known as a Crusnik. Physically, he is a tall man of 183 centimeters with long silver hair typically tied back with a black ribbon, ice blue eyes, and small round glasses with a double bridge. He wears a black priest's robe adorned with embroidered crosses and white gloves. Despite his youthful appearance of around twenty years old, his true age is approximately one thousand years.

His background stretches back to the year 2088, when he was created as a genetically engineered human in London as part of the Red Mars Project, an initiative designed to colonize Mars and alleviate Earth's overpopulation crisis. He was born from the same genetic code as his elder twin brother Cain Nightroad, making them effectively identical siblings, and he also has a younger sister named Seth Nightroad. During this era, Abel served as a lieutenant-colonel in the United Nations Aerospace Force and was in charge of the security division for the colonization project. His early personality was markedly different from his present demeanor; he was described as short-tempered, arrogant, and despotic, earning the hatred of the colonists under his command. This animosity led to an assassination attempt where colonists abandoned him in the Martian wilderness with a damaged environmental suit, leaving him to die from oxygen deprivation. He was rescued by a fellow genetically engineered being named Lilith Sahl, and together they discovered an ancient alien spacecraft containing advanced nanomachines. These nanomachines, known as the Crusnik bacillus, were infused into Abel and his siblings, granting them the ability to feed on the blood of vampires and granting incredible regenerative and destructive powers.

The colonization mission ultimately returned to Earth, but exposure to Earth's environment triggered vampirism in the returning colonists, sparking a devastating war known as Armageddon between humans and the newly emerged Methuselah, or vampires. During this conflict, Abel, fueled by hatred for humanity due to his experimental creation and mistreatment, sided with the Methuselah and became a legendary figure of destruction. He was personally responsible for the deaths of millions and earned fearsome titles such as the Angel of Destruction, the God of Slaughter, and the Enemy of the World. This violent path ended when his brother Cain murdered Lilith, who had sided with humanity. In a rage, Abel and his sister Seth forced Cain into an airlock and ejected him into Earth's atmosphere, apparently killing him. Overcome with grief and remorse for his atrocities, Abel spent the next nine hundred years mourning Lilith in seclusion within the catacombs beneath the Vatican.

Abel's current personality is a direct result of his long penance. In his everyday life, he is absent-minded, foolish, and perpetually hungry, often bumbling into comical mishaps that make him seem completely unsuited for his work. However, when a serious crisis emerges, he sheds this facade and becomes calm, cool, and highly capable under pressure. He is driven by a deep, profound grief and an overwhelming sense of guilt for his past sins, frequently referring to himself as a monster or a sinner. As an act of atonement, he has taken a strict vow of pacifism, swearing never to kill a human again, and he extends his protection to both humans and Methuselah, viewing both as essentially human. His primary motivation is to foster peace between the two races and to continue the work of Lilith, who had believed in protecting humanity.

Within the story, Abel serves as a派遣执行官 for the AX, the special operations division of the Vatican's Department of Foreign Affairs, operating under the codename Crusnik or Vampire Hunter. In this role, he investigates supernatural incidents and combats threats to peace. A key relationship is with Esther Blanchett, a young woman he saves early in the series. He cares for her deeply and is willing to go to extremes to protect her, though he may be oblivious to the depth of his own feelings. Esther, in turn, is more open about her romantic affection for him and seeks to understand his mysterious past. He maintains a professional relationship with his AX colleagues, including the mechanized priest Tres Iqus, but his most significant bond is with his surviving family. He shares a complex history with his sister, Seth, who now rules as the Empress of the Methuselah Empire, and he is driven by the knowledge that his twin brother Cain somehow survived his fall from orbit, becoming the primary antagonist Abel is determined to stop.

Throughout the narrative, Abel undergoes subtle but significant development. While his fundamental nature as a remorseful sinner seeking redemption remains constant, his interactions with Esther and his renewed purpose in the AX slowly pull him from the depths of his centuries-long depression. He begins to forge new bonds and actively engage with the world, rather than merely mourning the past. His development is also evident in his struggle to control his Crusnik nature, fearing the monstrous power within himself even as he is forced to use it to protect others.

Abel Nightroad's notable abilities are derived from the Crusnik 02 nanomachines in his blood, which feed on the vampiric bacillus in Methuselah blood. In his default human form, he possesses accelerated healing and is a skilled marksman with his pistol. By reciting an activation command, he can initiate his Crusnik form, which changes his appearance to resemble a vampire, granting him red eyes, fangs, claws, and dusky skin. The power of this form is measured in activation levels. At 40 percent, he can manifest a massive scythe made from his own hardened blood and summon large black wings that can serve as shields. At 80 percent, his power intensifies, allowing his wings and scythe to generate and discharge devastating electrical energy capable of leveling entire cities. His regeneration also becomes exceptionally rapid at this level, particularly when he has access to vampire blood to fuel the nanomachines. While a 100 percent activation is rarely shown, it represents the full, terrifying extent of his power as a Crusnik. Despite these godlike abilities, Abel activates his true form only as a last resort, deeply ashamed of the monster he becomes and bound by his vow to protect life rather than destroy it.
