Description
Ikki, the Phoenix Saint, is one of the most formidable and complex warriors among the Bronze Saints. He is the older brother of Andromeda Shun and is renowned as the most powerful of the original five Bronze Saints, a reputation that stems not only from his aggressive combat skills but from his unique, almost immortal resilience.

Ikki’s story is forged in tragedy, beginning in childhood. As one of the one hundred orphans gathered by Mitsumasa Kido, the future Saints were sent to deadly locations to train. When the gentle Shun was assigned to the hellish Death Queen Island, a place known as a living hell where few return, Ikki selflessly took his brother’s place. There, under the brutal tutelage of a master named Guilty, Ikki was indoctrinated with the philosophy that only hatred could unlock true power. The pivotal moment of his training came when Guilty, frustrated by Ikki’s refusal to deliver a killing blow out of respect, struck at him. Ikki dodged, but the fatal blow killed Esmeralda, a young woman he had grown to love. Consumed by grief and rage, Ikki’s latent hatred erupted, allowing him to kill his master and claim the Phoenix Cloth.

His personality is the stark opposite of his gentle, emotional younger brother. Ikki is cold, harsh, aggressive, and fiercely solitary. Initially consumed by a desire for revenge against Mitsumasa Kido and all who sent him to suffer, he appears as a primary antagonist during the Galaxian Wars, stealing the Sagittarius Gold Cloth and commanding the Black Saints. However, this cruelty is a shell over a deeply noble and compassionate core. Beneath his rough exterior lies a profound loyalty to his brother and, eventually, to Athena and his fellow Saints. He despises teamwork and prefers to operate as a lone wolf, yet he consistently arrives at the most critical moments to rescue his companions from certain death.

Ikki’s role in the story is that of the deus ex machina—the unpredictable savior. After overcoming his initial hatred, he becomes a crucial ally in every major saga. During the Sanctuary arc, he single-handedly defeats the Gold Saint Virgo Shaka, sacrificing his senses to do so and earning the Gold Saint’s respect. In the Poseidon arc, he battles a General and later confronts the Sea Dragon Kanon. During the Hades arc, he is the only one to directly challenge the god Hades himself after the deity possesses Shun, a confrontation that tests his greatest internal conflict: his unbreakable bond with his brother.

Key relationships define his journey. His bond with Shun is the central pillar of his existence, the source of both his initial vengeance and his ultimate redemption. The memory of Esmeralda remains a source of quiet pain and strength, representing the love that hatred tried to destroy. He also shares a notable rivalry and respect with Virgo Shaka, the man who nearly killed him but also recognized his worth.

As a fighter, Ikki possesses staggering abilities that defy his Bronze Saint ranking. His Phoenix Cloth has the legendary ability to self-repair, even from complete destruction, and grows stronger each time it is reborn. His signature techniques are devastating. The Phoenix Illusion Demonic Fist destroys the enemy’s mind by trapping them in terrifying illusions or forcing them to relive traumatic memories. His ultimate physical attack, Rising Phoenix Wings, unleashes a massive wave of fiery cosmos capable of leveling buildings. Through intense battles, he awakens the Seventh Sense, elevating his power to that of a Gold Saint, and later the Eighth Sense, allowing him to enter the Underworld of his own will. His immortality is so profound that even gods struggle to keep him dead, and it is implied he grows stronger with every return from the brink of death.
