Description
Freezer is a fictional character and one of the primary antagonists in the Dragon Ball Z series. He is a galactic tyrant and the self-proclaimed emperor of the universe, feared for his immense power and cruelty. Freezer belongs to an unnamed, rare extraterrestrial race that is known for its ability to survive in the vacuum of space without the need for oxygen. His name is a pun on the word "freezer," and consistent with this theme, members of his family and his elite forces are named after cold-related objects and dairy products.
In terms of background, Freezer is the son of King Cold and has a brother named Cooler, who appears in several Dragon Ball Z films. His family leads a powerful interplanetary organization that conquets and sells planets, often exterminating the original inhabitants in the process. Before the events of the series, Freezer employed the Saiyan race as a planetary conquest force. However, he came to fear two things: the growing power of the Saiyans, specifically their ability to grow stronger after recovering from near-death, and the legend of the Super Saiyan, a mythic warrior of immense power. Acting on this paranoia, and partly under the orders of the God of Destruction, Beerus, Freezer destroyed Planet Vegeta, the homeworld of the Saiyans, killing most of the race. He told the few surviving Saiyans, including Vegeta, that the planet was destroyed by a meteorite.
Freezer's personality is defined by a cruel, sadistic, and arrogant nature. He is completely without empathy, showing a cold disregard for the lives of his own soldiers and a willingness to destroy entire planetary populations to achieve his goals. A notable trait is his use of polite and calm speech patterns, which creates an unsettling contrast with his extreme brutality and ruthlessness. Despite his immense power, he suffers from a deep-seated paranoia regarding the Super Saiyan legend and can become desperate and cowardly when faced with a superior opponent.
His primary motivation during the Namek saga is to collect the seven Dragon Balls of Planet Namek to wish for immortality, ensuring he can never be defeated. This quest puts him into direct conflict with the series' protagonists. Freezer's role in the story is pivotal; he is the main antagonist of the Namek saga and serves as the catalyst for many major events. His destruction of Planet Vegeta is the reason Goku was sent to Earth as a baby, and his tyranny drives Vegeta's character arc. The desperate battle against Freezer on Namek ultimately forces Goku to transform into the legendary Super Saiyan for the first time, a defining moment in the series.
Freezer has several key relationships. His archenemy is Son Goku, the Saiyan who defeats him on Namek. He shares a complex relationship with Prince Vegeta, whom he manipulated and betrayed, leading to Vegeta's deep-seated hatred for him. He commands a vast army of followers, including his elite guards Dodoria and Zarbon, as well as the Ginyu Force, a special mercenary squadron. His father, King Cold, holds him in high regard and later seeks to avenge him.
A significant development is Freezer's ability to transform. He was born with immense power and uses successive transformation states to suppress his true strength. His first form is small, weak-looking, and uses a hovering chair for mobility, with a recorded power level of 530,000. His second form is larger and more muscular, with horns and a power level exceeding one million. His third form is a grotesque, reptilian-looking state that he uses briefly. His final or "true" form is compact and seemingly simple, but it unleashes his full potential, allowing him to access 100% of his power at the cost of rapidly draining his stamina. After being defeated and left for dead on the exploding Namek, Freezer is found by his father and rebuilt as a cyborg, Mecha Freezer, who travels to Earth seeking revenge but is swiftly killed by Future Trunks.
Freezer possesses a wide array of notable abilities. He is an expert hand-to-hand combatant but prefers killing with energy-based techniques. His signature attack is the Death Beam, a small, fast, and incredibly precise laser fired from his fingertip that can pierce through nearly anything. He also wields the Death Ball, a powerful sphere of energy used to destroy planets. He can create a psychic energy disk called the Kienzan that he can control remotely, as well as a technique to trap opponents in a ball of energy. In later films and the sequel series Dragon Ball Super, Freezer returns and achieves a new, even more powerful form called Golden Freezer after training for the first time in his life.
