Description
Yugi Mutō is a high school student living in Domino City. He possesses the ancient Egyptian Millennium Puzzle, which contains the spirit of Pharaoh Atem, known as Yami Yugi. This spirit sometimes takes control of Yugi's body during perilous situations, an occurrence Yugi was initially unaware of. The two spirits ultimately form a partnership, jointly holding the title "King of Games." Yugi exhibits exceptional skill in games, puzzles, and particularly the Duel Monsters card game, coupled with a kind-hearted and forgiving nature free of malice. He shows initial shyness and lack of confidence, especially around admirers or large crowds, but becomes more determined over time. He is willing to sacrifice himself for others, including his friends or Yami Yugi.

Yugi lives with his mother and paternal grandfather, Solomon Mutō, who owns the Kame Game shop. Solomon acquired the Millennium Puzzle during an archaeological expedition in Egypt's Valley of the Kings and later gave it to Yugi. Yugi has a close group of friends: Joey Wheeler, Tristan Taylor, Téa Gardner, and Ryou Bakura. He has held a longstanding romantic crush on Téa since childhood. Joey and Tristan once bullied Yugi, but they became friends after Yugi defended them during an attack by another student, Ushio. This event also prompted Joey to retrieve a missing piece of the Millennium Puzzle he had previously discarded.

During the events of *Yu-Gi-Oh! 3D: Bonds Beyond Time*, set after the Battle City tournament but before the Waking the Dragons arc, Yugi attends a duel tournament in Domino City hosted by Maximillion Pegasus, accompanied by Solomon. The antagonist Paradox, a survivor from a ruined future, travels back in time to eliminate Duel Monsters by killing Pegasus. Paradox attacks the tournament using corrupted versions of powerful monsters like "Stardust Dragon," "Cyber End Dragon," and "Rainbow Dragon." The assault kills Pegasus, Solomon, and many bystanders, leaving Yugi as the sole survivor. Finding his grandfather's bandanna in the rubble, Yugi grieves over Solomon's death.

The Crimson Dragon intervenes, transporting Yugi 30 minutes back in time before Paradox's attack. Yugi encounters time travelers Yusei Fudo (from the future) and Jaden Yuki (from an intermediate timeline), who explain Paradox's plan to alter history by eradicating Duel Monsters. Recognizing the catastrophic consequences—including the erasure of all people and events tied to the game—Yugi agrees to help stop Paradox. To confront this threat, Yugi allows Yami Yugi to take control of his body. Yugi (represented by Yami Yugi), Jaden, and Yusei engage in a three-on-one duel against Paradox. The trio defeats Paradox by combining the powers of their key monsters, preventing the alteration of history. This victory ensures the revival of Pegasus, Solomon, and the other victims, restoring the timeline. After the duel, Yugi bids farewell to Jaden and Yusei as they return to their respective eras.
