Description
Hamtaro is a male golden hamster owned by a young girl named Laura Haruna. He possesses a cheerful, energetic, and innocent personality, prioritizing friendship and helping others. His daily adventures involve escaping his cage to join fellow hamsters, collectively known as the Ham-Hams, at their clubhouse. His selflessness and reliability make him an informal leader within the group.
Hamtaro shares a profound bond with Laura and becomes distressed when ignored by her. This connection occasionally extends to sharing dreams, such as recurring dreams of a princess hamster pleading for help. These dreams motivate his actions during a family trip to Laura's father's hometown in the film "Tottoko Hamutarō: Ham Ham Ham - Jya! Maboroshi no Princess". His determination to aid the dream princess demonstrates his bravery and willingness to confront challenges for others.
His innocence largely renders him oblivious to romantic concepts. Despite crushes from female hamsters including Bijou, Sparkle, Oshare, Barrette, and Lapis, he rarely reciprocates these feelings platonically. Exceptions include brief admiration for Championi and Princess Cye-Ra, the latter kissing him on the cheek during their rescue. Bijou's persistent affection leads to dates and competitions for his attention, though Hamtaro remains unaware of her romantic intentions.
Key friendships include Oxnard, whom he met first after moving to a new house, and Boss, an older field hamster discovered alongside Oxnard. He views Boss as a wiser figure and maintains a brother-like bond with Oxnard, remaining unaware of Boss's jealousy regarding Bijou's affections. His leadership manifests through rallying the Ham-Hams to solve problems, whether assisting Laura, other humans, or fellow hamsters.
Alternate manga versions exist. One iteration lives with an owner named Yukari, displays more territorial hamster behaviors, and eventually marries a hamster named Momo. Another resides with Amy, developing a romantic attachment to her and viewing her friend Timothy as a rival. A third version lives in a pet shop with an owner named Ji-chan. These depictions contrast with his generally naive and adventure-driven anime persona.
His speech patterns include phrases like "Hamha!", "paka-paka", and "kushi-kushi" in English adaptations, replacing the Japanese ending "nanoda". Across all continuities, his core traits of curiosity, optimism, and loyalty remain consistent.
