Description
Ai Haibara, originally named Shiho Miyano, served as a scientist within the covert Black Organization under the codename "Sherry." Her parents, Atsushi and Elena Miyano, fellow organization scientists, died mysteriously during her youth, leaving her to inherit their research on the "Silver Bullet" project. By 13, she spearheaded the development of APTX 4869, a lethal poison with unintended de-aging effects responsible for transforming Shinichi Kudo into Conan Edogawa. Following her sister Akemi’s unresolved death, she defied the organization by ceasing her work, resulting in imprisonment. A desperate suicide attempt using APTX 4869 backfired, reducing her to a child and enabling her escape. Under Professor Agasa’s protection, she adopted the alias Ai Haibara, enrolling at Teitan Elementary alongside Conan and the Detective Boys.

Initially reserved and wary due to her traumatic history, Haibara slowly forges connections with the group, masking her sharp intellect and adult perspective with a guarded exterior. Her vulnerabilities surface subtly—nostalgia for peanut butter and blueberry jam sandwiches from her U.S. upbringing, admiration for footballer Ryusuke Higo, whose career echoes themes of betrayal, and a penchant for bargaining luxury fashion items like Prada bags in exchange for aid. Collaborating closely with Conan, she tirelessly works to reverse APTX 4869’s effects, hampered by lost research data. Pragmatic yet prone to self-sacrifice, she once staged her death during the "Mystery Train" incident to mislead the Black Organization, showcasing her resolve to sever ties with her past.

Cynicism and quiet compassion define her demeanor. She harbors deep empathy for animals and the Detective Boys, whom she cautiously protects as her first genuine friends. Lingering fear of Black Organization operatives like Gin and Vermouth drives her vigilance, leading her to withhold APTX antidotes from Conan in high-risk scenarios, such as prior to *The Fist of Blue Sapphire* events. Moments of raw emotion—like revisiting her sister’s voicemail in *Countdown to Heaven*—underscore her fragile reconciliation of past grief with her newfound life. Though integrated into the Detective Boys, her wariness persists, a testament to her dual identity as both a fugitive scientist and a guarded yet compassionate ally.
