Description
Ai Haibara, born Shiho Miyano and codenamed Sherry within the Black Organization, is the daughter of scientists Elena Miyano (British) and Atsushi Miyano (Japanese). Her parents researched the "Silver Bullet" drug for the syndicate before dying in an alleged accident. Subsequently groomed by the Organization, Shiho was sent to the United States for education and forced to continue their research in Japan from age 13. By 18, she developed the lethal poison APTX 4869. During animal testing, she discovered its rare de-aging side effect but kept this secret. The Organization used APTX 4869 for assassinations, including on Shinichi Kudo, who shrank into a child instead of dying. Shiho later suspected his survival and falsified his death status to protect him.
Following her sister Akemi Miyano's execution by Gin, Shiho rebelled and was imprisoned. To escape execution, she ingested APTX 4869 intending suicide but shrank to a child's form, allowing her to escape confinement. Exhausted, she collapsed near Shinichi's home and was found by Professor Hiroshi Agasa, who took her in. Concealing her identity, she adopted the alias "Ai Haibara", deriving "Haibara" (meaning "ash field") from Cordelia Gray and "Ai" from Irene Adler.
Enrolling at Teitan Elementary School as Ai Haibara, she joined the Detective Boys alongside the shrunken Shinichi (now Conan Edogawa). Initially distrustful due to her role in creating APTX 4869, Conan eventually accepted her as an ally. Haibara maintained a cold, sarcastic demeanor early on, distancing herself to protect others from Organization retaliation. Over time, she developed close bonds with the Detective Boys, Professor Agasa, and Ran Mouri, gradually embracing her new life. Her personality combines high intelligence with dry wit, though she retains caution, often sensing the Organization's presence instinctively. She admires soccer player Ryusuke Higo for his resilience after betrayal, reflecting her own experiences.
Haibara assists Conan in developing an APTX 4869 antidote using fragmented data from her parents' research and Akemi's belongings. She has encountered Organization members: Vermouth discovered her identity but was persuaded by Conan to spare her; Bourbon later leaked her location, leading to a staged explosion that faked her death. Vermouth knows she survived and withholds this information.
During the "Kurogane no Submarine" events, the Black Organization infiltrated the "Pacific Buoy" facility. Its "All-Age Recognition" AI surveillance system identified Haibara as Shiho Miyano via security footage. Kidnapped by Vodka and the operative Pinga, she was taken to a submarine. Vermouth manipulated the recognition system to show false matches, creating doubt about Haibara's identity and protecting her secret. Haibara escaped the submarine with engineer Naomi Argento – later revealed as a childhood acquaintance Shiho shielded from bullies in America. Post-credits scenes confirmed Vermouth disguised herself as Shiho to sabotage the system's credibility.
