Ran Mouri is the daughter of private detective Kogoro Mouri and lawyer Eri Kisaki. Her parents separated when she was seven, and one of her ongoing personal goals is to facilitate their reconciliation. She is a high school student at Teitan High School, where she serves as the captain of the karate club and is a Kanto Region karate champion. She first met Shinichi Kudo in their Sakura class during early childhood. She began to develop feelings for him after noticing he wore a paper name badge to prevent her from being bullied for being the only one without a proper badge. Unbeknownst to her, their homeroom teacher was planning to kidnap her, a plot foiled by Shinichi with his father's assistance. When they were six years old, they sneaked into Teitan Elementary School together to investigate a rumor about a hat-wearing monster, where they encountered the elder Kaitou Kid. Approximately one year before the series' beginning, Ran accompanied Shinichi on a trip to New York to visit his parents. During this trip, she witnessed Shinichi solve his first case and gain recognition as a detective. They met his mother, Yukiko Kudo, and her actress friend, Sharon Vineyard, who is the public face of Vermouth, a member of the Black Organization. Later that evening, Ran encountered Vermouth disguised as a serial killer. When Vermouth was about to fall to her death, Ran caught her arm, and Shinichi helped pull her to safety. This act led Vermouth to refer to Ran as "Angel" and Shinichi as "Cool Guy." It was also during this trip that Ran realized she was in love with Shinichi. Following Shinichi's disappearance after their visit to Tropical Land Amusement Park, Ran met Conan Edogawa, who was introduced by Professor Hiroshi Agasa as a distant relative. She agreed to look after Conan at Agasa's request and quickly came to view him as a surrogate younger brother. Despite this, she has frequently suspected Conan's true identity is actually Shinichi, though Conan, sometimes with assistance from allies like Ai Haibara or Kaito Kid, has always managed to provide a sufficient alibi to alleviate her concerns. Specific instances of her suspicion include the Monthly Presents Case, where she noticed Conan's deductive abilities mirrored Shinichi's; the Suspicious Uncle Case, where she observed Conan's physical resemblance to a young Shinichi; the School Play Case, where she donated blood to an injured Conan knowing they shared a rare blood type; and the Suspicious Cellphone Case, where she attempted to access Conan's phone to check for an email she had sent to Shinichi. Ran genuinely cares for those she loves, exhibiting patience, kindness, and a nurturing nature. She also possesses a strong sense of justice that borders on idealism. To avoid forcing Shinichi to choose between her and his important case, she has chosen to wait for him to return, trusting his promise despite the emotional pain their separation causes her. She can be hot-blooded and impulsive, particularly when those she cares about are involved. This trait, combined with a tendency to jump to conclusions and her willingness to use karate against perceived wrongdoers, has led to several near-miss misunderstandings. She is not above using her martial arts skills as a subtle threat to keep people, including her father, in line. In earlier stories, she would become violently suspicious if she thought Shinichi was philandering, though more recent developments have led her to trust his intentions. She demonstrates significant bravery and resourcefulness, often rescuing Conan from dangerous situations and remaining calm when threatened by a gun or surrounded by flames. However, she has an irrational fear of the supernatural and horror-related content, which causes her to forget her combat prowess and freeze in fear. She is typically unaware of her own physical attractiveness and often remains oblivious to men's interest in her. When made aware, she does not respond in kind due to her feelings for Shinichi. Although in love with him, she has repeatedly failed to convey her feelings directly because she becomes self-conscious. Ran is very self-sufficient and mature for her age, managing many of the Mouri household's financial affairs and all cooking and housework due to her father's frequent drunkenness and fiscal irresponsibility. She also ensures her father does not slack off in his job, maintains his best behavior for client meetings, and often greets potential clients while providing refreshments. She has been noted to cry frequently. She appreciates fine art and has a good memory and attention to detail, which she has used to contribute to case investigations. Her most notable skill is her exceptional prowess in martial arts. She holds a black belt in karate and is the captain and ace of her high school team, with sufficient skill to win regional tournaments. Her skills are considered comparable to world-class martial artist Makoto Kyogoku, with whom she can attack in perfect sync. She is also well-trained in judo by her father, showing similar proficiency in his signature one-armed shoulder throw. She possesses considerable raw strength for her frame, demonstrated by prying open powerless elevator doors, and remarkable speed, able to react to and knock away falling pipes and dodge a bullet at close range while on guard. Her strikes are also fast, evidenced by her ability to swat down a bee with a single kick. She is noted to have an unusual amount of stamina. Additional skills include proficiency in household management such as sewing and cooking. She is musically talented, being a very good singer and capable piano player. She can speak capable English and possesses astonishing luck and instincts in gambling, lotteries, and games of chance, having never been known to lose. She also has alert senses in darkness, enabling her to notice an attacker with a weapon and strike to protect herself. In terms of appearance, Ran is a fair-skinned girl of above-average height, often cited as being 160 cm or 165 cm tall and weighing 52 kg. She has big, bluish-purple eyes and long, straight, dark brown hair that is hip-length, tucked behind her ears, with short wavy bangs over her forehead that evolved into a stylized triangular point. She has a slender yet athletic and curvaceous build and is considered extremely beautiful, a fact noted by many characters throughout the series. She has been scouted to become a model on more than one occasion. When not wearing her school uniform or a special outfit, the colors of her shirt and socks always match. She keeps a sea cucumber key-chain on her phone, which she received from Shinichi as a penalty for him causing her to lose her previous phone. Ran's name contains a pun relating to the English word "run," which she herself references by stating she likes to run because of her name. The name "Ran" also means "orchid."
