Description
Kagome Higurashi is a central character in the narrative of InuYasha: The Final Act. She is a fifteen-year-old girl from modern-day Tokyo who lives at the Higurashi Shrine with her mother, her younger brother Sota, and her grandfather. Her life changes dramatically on her fifteenth birthday when a demon pulls her into the ancient Bone-Eater's Well on her family's property, transporting her five hundred years into Japan's tumultuous Warring States period. It is then revealed that Kagome is the reincarnation of a powerful priestess named Kikyo and that the legendary Shikon Jewel, a gem of immense power, had been unknowingly sealed inside her body since her birth. During a skirmish, the jewel is forcibly extracted from her and then accidentally shattered into numerous fragments that scatter across the land, launching her on a dangerous quest to retrieve them.
At her core, Kagome possesses a strong, pure, and empathetic heart. She is defined by her courage, often displaying a reckless bravery as she throws herself into dangerous situations to protect others, despite her lack of formal combat training. Her sense of justice is powerful and unwavering; she is unafraid to voice her opinions on what is right and wrong, even when facing a vastly more powerful enemy. While generally kind and compassionate, she also has a famously short temper and a stubborn streak, which frequently leads to arguments with her hot-headed partner, Inuyasha. This conflict is often resolved by her using a magical necklace around his neck with the single command "Sit, boy!" which forces him to the ground. Despite her immaturity and the occasional desire for a normal life as a student, she is remarkably unfazed by the violence and supernatural horrors of the feudal era, adapting quickly due to her strong spirit.
Her primary motivation throughout The Final Act is twofold: to defeat the evil half-demon Naraku and to collect every shard of the Shikon Jewel to prevent it from being used for wickedness. As the story progresses, her personal motivation becomes deeply intertwined with her love for Inuyasha and her desire to protect him and their group of friends. Her role in the story is that of both a powerful priestess and the emotional center of her group. She is the one who can sense the jewel shards, purify demonic corruption, and break through the emotional walls of those around her. Her unique ability to travel between the modern and feudal eras through the well also provides her companions with supplies, rest, and a connection to a world free from constant conflict.
Kagome's most significant relationships are with her companions. Her bond with Inuyasha is the emotional core of the series, beginning as a reluctant and bickering alliance born of necessity and growing into a deep, enduring romance. She loves him despite his brash nature and his unresolved feelings for her previous incarnation, Kikyo, which is a source of great personal pain and jealousy for her. With the young fox demon Shippo, she takes on a maternal, doting role, bringing him treats from the modern era. She is close friends with Sango, the demon slayer, and the monk Miroku, often providing emotional support or a sharp criticism of his womanizing ways. In the modern era, she maintains a normal life with her school friends and family, who help her create excuses for her frequent absences.
Kagome undergoes significant development during The Final Act, primarily concerning her own powers and her emotional maturity. For much of her journey, her immense spiritual power is intentionally sealed by Magatsuhi, the evil will of the Shikon Jewel, which fears her true potential. After Magatsuhi is destroyed, her powers are fully unleashed, making her an exceptionally strong priestess, potentially surpassing even Kikyo. Her archery skills also improve dramatically, from accidentally shattering the jewel to landing precise, powerful shots with her purifying arrows. Emotionally, she learns to accept her complicated feelings of jealousy toward Kikyo, realizing they are a natural part of her love for Inuyasha. She moves from viewing Kikyo as a rival to saving her life and ultimately finding peace with her legacy. Her final act in the story, after Naraku is defeated, is to make the correct, selfless wish upon the completed Shikon Jewel, wishing for it to disappear from existence forever, thus ending its cycle of tragedy.
Kagome possesses a variety of notable abilities stemming from her immense spiritual power. Her primary weapon is the sacred bow and arrow; by infusing her arrows with spiritual energy, she can perform purification abilities, which can purify demonic miasma, shatter curses, and destroy powerful demons. She has a unique, innate ability to sense the location of Shikon Jewel shards. Her spiritual power also grants her immunity to demonic auras and many illusions, and she can project barriers for protection. As a direct result of being Kikyo's reincarnation, she can also see ghosts, spirits, and divine auras that are invisible to normal humans. Finally, her connection to the Bone-Eater's Well allows her to travel through time, moving between her present-day Tokyo and the feudal era.
