Serena travels with Ash Ketchum, Clemont, and Bonnie. While the group camps, Volcanion crashes nearby after being forced from the sky. Later, Serena, Clemont, and Bonnie reunite with Ash and Volcanion after they retrieve the artificial Pokémon Magearna from the Azoth Kingdom; Serena shares the group's fascination with Magearna. She provides Ash with dry clothes after his become soaked and damaged. Accompanying Volcanion and Magearna towards the Nebel Plateau, the group faces an attack by Team Rocket. Serena flees the battle zone with Clemont and Bonnie, carrying Magearna to protect it, but they fall into a Team Rocket pitfall trap during their retreat. Serena continues the journey to the Nebel Plateau, participating in the group's efforts to aid the local Pokémon. She joins the collective resistance against the invasion led by Councillor Alva and his forces when they assault the plateau to recapture Magearna. Following the conflict involving the Azoth Kingdom's flying fortress, Serena leaves the Nebel Plateau with Ash, Clemont, and Bonnie, returning to the Azoth Kingdom.
