Description
Franky, born Cutty Flam in the South Blue, was abandoned at sea by his pirate parents at age ten. He washed ashore on Scrap Island, constructing a cannon from scrap that impressed legendary shipwright Tom. Tom took him as an apprentice in Water 7, where fellow apprentice Iceburg nicknamed him "Franky." His training focused on building "Battle Frankies," warships designed to fight Sea Kings. Franky declared his dream to build and sail his own ship around the world, prompting Tom to state achieving this meant surpassing him. He refused an offer to join the Roger Pirates due to deep-seated distrust of pirates from his parents' abandonment.
At 26, Spandam of CP5 framed Franky for attacking Water 7 using the Battle Frankies, resulting in Tom's death sentence. Franky confronted Spandam and blocked the Puffing Tom train, suffering catastrophic injuries. Presumed dead, he rebuilt himself as a cyborg using scrap from a wrecked ship, tattooing "BF-36" on his shoulders as the 36th Battle Franky. Four years later, Iceburg entrusted him with the Pluton blueprints and urged him to leave Water 7. Franky refused, forming the Franky Family—ship dismantlers and bounty hunters controlling the city's underworld while protecting it. He worked to amass funds for Adam Wood to build his dream ship.
Franky debuted antagonistically during the Straw Hat Pirates' arrival. His family attacked Usopp, stealing 200 million berries, leading Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji to destroy the Franky House. In retaliation, Franky kidnapped Usopp and the Going Merry to lure Luffy, resulting in both being captured by CP9. Transported to Enies Lobby, Franky learned of Iceburg's alliance with the World Government. Witnessing Luffy's resolve to save Nico Robin, Franky burned the Pluton blueprints to deny the World Government, allying with the Straw Hats. He defeated CP9's Fukurou and aided Robin's rescue. Recognizing shared goals, he built the Thousand Sunny from Adam Wood and joined as shipwright to fulfill his circumnavigation dream. His initial 44,000,000 berry bounty stemmed from Enies Lobby.
During the two-year timeskip, Franky traveled to Baldimore, upgrading his cyborg body using Dr. Vegapunk's research. Enhancements included reinforced limbs, advanced weaponry, and controllable hair. An accident destroying Vegapunk's lab burned away his facial and frontal skin, exposing his metallic endoskeleton; he covered this with a tiger pelt. Post-timeskip, his appearance featured larger shoulders and arms with visible joints marked "BF-37," replacing the "BF-36" tattoo. He kept his teal-blue hair, now stylizable via a nose button, and typically wore swim briefs and unbuttoned Hawaiian shirts for access to mechanical components, though his back remained an organic weak point. His bounty rose to 94,000,000 berries after Dressrosa and 394,000,000 berries after the Raid on Onigashima.
Franky's personality blends flamboyance, emotional vulnerability, and fierce loyalty. He frequently exclaims "SUPER!" while striking signature poses and cries openly at tragic stories. Despite initial thuggishness, he deeply cares for his chosen family, defending the Franky Family and Straw Hat crewmates fiercely. He often acts as an older brother figure to younger crew members, balancing comedy with maturity. His preference for revealing clothing stems from practicality, as covering restricts access to integrated weapons like chest cannons and arm rockets.
His cyborg body grants superhuman strength and durability, excluding his vulnerable back. Weapons include cola-powered systems: Coup de Vent (compressed air blasts) and Radical Beam lasers learned during his timeskip training. Cola stored in abdominal compartments fuels attacks. He modifies his body into vehicles like the Brachio Tank V or combines them into the General Franky mecha. As shipwright, he maintains the Thousand Sunny and crafts equipment like the Mini Merry II submarine. Surgical expertise allows self-repairs, demonstrated by reattaching his own hand in combat.
