Description
Roronoa Zoro, known as "Pirate Hunter" Zoro, hails from Shimotsuki Village in the East Blue. He is the son of Tera and Roronoa Arashi and descends from the legendary samurai Shimotsuki Ryuma through his grandmother Shimotsuki Furiko and granduncle Shimotsuki Ushimaru. Orphaned by age eight, Zoro trained at a local dojo under Koushirou, forging a rivalry and friendship with Koushirou's daughter, Kuina. Following her death, he inherited her sword, Wado Ichimonji, vowing to become the world's greatest swordsman in her honor. This promise drove him to develop his signature Three Sword Style, wielding one sword in each hand and a third in his mouth. Before joining the Straw Hat Pirates, Zoro worked as a bounty hunter to support himself, earning his "Pirate Hunter" epithet. His journey to find Dracule Mihawk, the world's strongest swordsman, led to him becoming lost at sea, cementing his notoriously poor sense of direction.
During the Skypiea Arc, Zoro ascended to the sky island with the Straw Hat Pirates via the Knock Up Stream. Separated from part of the crew, he guarded the Going Merry on the Sacrificial Altar alongside Chopper before exploring Upper Yard with Nami and Robin. Zoro's group deduced that Upper Yard was part of the lost city of Jaya from Montblanc Noland's legend, linking it to the fabled city of gold. He battled adversaries, including the Shandia warrior Braham, whom he defeated using his 36 Pound Cannon technique. His directional challenges featured prominently when he mistook a South Bird for prey; the bird followed him but failed to correct his path. Zoro participated in the crew's "Eve of Gold Festival," celebrating their discovery, and later confronted the arc's antagonist, Enel, though his efforts were hampered by Enel's lightning-based Devil Fruit abilities.
Zoro serves as the Straw Hat Pirates' combatant and de facto first mate, recognized for his loyalty and leadership during critical decisions. He employs Three Sword Style, initially wielding two unnamed katanas destroyed by Mihawk. After replacing them in Loguetown, his arsenal included Wado Ichimonji (a Great Grade blade symbolizing his promise to Kuina), Sandai Kitetsu (a cursed Grade Blade), and Yubashiri (a Skillful Grade blade later destroyed). Post-timeskip, he wields Shusui (a black blade from Ryuma) and Enma (a Great Grade blade from Kozuki Oden), both obtained in Wano. Zoro is proficient in Armament and Observation Haki and later unlocks Conqueror's Haki, refining it to enhance his swordsmanship. His bounty escalates from 60,000,000 to 1,111,000,000 berries following major conflicts. Personality-wise, he balances confidence and impulsiveness with a strict code of honor, often clashing with Sanji but prioritizing crew safety, as seen when he begged Mihawk for training after the Summit War. His confirmed Shimotsuki lineage in Wano ties him to Ryuma and Ushimaru, though he remains unaware of this connection, focusing solely on surpassing Mihawk.
