OVA
Description
Genkai is an elderly human woman renowned for exceptional spiritual power and martial arts mastery. Her appearance features light, wavy pink hair stopping at the shoulders, brown eyes, and a small, aged build. She typically wears a long red sleeveless tunic with green trim over a white long-sleeved shirt, matching white martial arts pants, and purple shoes, occasionally adding a purple cap bearing the maji '霊' (Spirit, Soul). Using the Reihado-ken technique, she can temporarily regain her youthful form, distinguished by vibrant pink hair often in a braid and celebrated as the most beautiful warrior of her era. She concealed this younger identity under bandages and a mask as the Masked Fighter during the Dark Tournament.

Her personality blends pragmatism, discipline, and underlying compassion. A cold, hard demeanor, forged by rigorous training to master the Spirit Wave Orb technique, leads her to view emotional attachment as a potential weakness. This pragmatism extends to permitting lethal combat in her disciple trials, prioritizing capability over ethics. Despite this, she exhibits compassion through actions like healing Kazuma Kuwabara after a brutal match and freeing mentally enslaved humans during the Dark Tournament to spare Yusuke Urameshi emotional pain. She develops a deep, familial bond with Yusuke, treating him like a grandson and repeatedly risking herself to protect him. A notable contrast to her stern persona is her proficiency and enjoyment of video games; she maintains a private arcade at her mountain compound, modified to evaluate spiritual abilities.

Her backstory establishes her as a prodigious martial artist who physically and spiritually matched demons in her prime. She co-founded a dojo with the Toguro Brothers, but their students were massacred by the demon Kairen during their absence. Vowing revenge, she and the brothers entered the Dark Tournament, ultimately defeating Kairen. Her victor's wish was to never be involved with the tournament again, driven by disillusionment after the Toguro Brothers traded their humanity for demonic immortality. Post-tournament, she retired, using accumulated wealth to purchase woodland near the coast where she built a mansion dojo. She opened her estate to assist those with spiritual afflictions, including teenage Shizuru and Kazuma Kuwabara. A romantic history existed between her and Younger Toguro during their prime.

In the Spirit Detective Saga, Genkai organized the Disciple Selection Trials (Genkai Tournament in the anime) to find an heir for her Spirit Wave technique. Aware the demon Rando intended to infiltrate the tournament to steal her techniques and kill her, she designed rigorous preliminary tests involving spirit energy-sensitive lots, arcade games measuring spiritual attributes, and a timed forest crossing infested with demons. She maintained strict neutrality during matches, refusing to disqualify Rando despite knowing his intentions, prioritizing the preservation of her techniques. Yusuke Urameshi emerged victorious, leading to six months of grueling training under her guidance to prepare him for inheriting the Spirit Wave, though he did not fully master it during this period.

The Dark Tournament Saga saw her join Team Urameshi as the Masked Fighter. Before the finals against Team Toguro, she revealed her identity and transferred the majority of her Spirit Energy to Yusuke via the Spirit Wave Orb succession technique, acknowledging it was the only way he could defeat Toguro and accepting the near-fatal risk to Yusuke. She conserved her remaining energy for her own matches, defeating Shishiwakamaru and Suzuki before being killed by Younger Toguro with a single punch. In the afterlife, she confronted Toguro journeying to Hell, attempting to persuade him he had suffered enough. Toguro entrusted her with ensuring Yusuke did not follow his path before departing. Her body, secretly given to Koenma by Toguro before the finals, was later revived using the tournament's wish prize.

Following her revival, she continued mentoring Yusuke as he grappled with his partial demon heritage. In the Chapter Black Saga, she dispatched three psychics seeking her help to test Yusuke and his allies, forcing them to confront their overconfidence; she wore a martial arts outfit in shades of yellow during this period. Post-series materials, including the *Opening & Ending Encyclopedia* OVA, depict her residing at her estate, which she eventually bequeathed to Yusuke and his friends upon her natural death. These materials also reference her legacy continuing through Yusuke's actions, such as operating a ramen stand.
