Description
In the modern Reiwa era, supernatural yokai that were sealed away centuries ago have begun spilling back into the human world, threatening the peace of everyday life. Professional exorcists are tasked with finding and sealing these creatures, but one high school student discovers he has an unconventional weapon against the supernatural.
The story centers on two main characters with opposing personalities. Kuin is a dedicated if somewhat timid exorcist who has the spiritual power to seal yokai but lacks confidence when confronting them directly. His classmate Murakami is a stone-cold skeptic with a sharp tongue and an almost supernatural ability to see through logical flaws, but he possesses no exorcist abilities whatsoever. When Kuin struggles to seal a kappa haunting a local river, Murakami accompanies him for moral support and accidentally discovers his talent. By ruthlessly pointing out the inconsistencies in yokai legends and the creatures own foolish behavior, Murakami can verbally tear them down so thoroughly that their spiritual energy weakens, allowing Kuin to seal them away.
The manga follows this unlikely duo as they encounter and defeat a wide variety of yokai drawn from Japanese folklore. Each confrontation plays out as an extended roast battle, with Murakami using modern logic, common sense, and pointed insults to dismantle ancient creatures who find themselves ill-adapted to the contemporary world. Early chapters feature lower-ranking yokai such as kappa and tengu, but the story gradually escalates as the pair work their way through a hierarchy of increasingly powerful supernatural beings. Major yokai figures who appear include Hakutaku and the legendary oni leader Shuten Doji.
As the series progresses, defeated yokai are sealed into cards that can summon chibi versions of the creatures later, adding to the recurring cast of supporting characters. The narrative also introduces several human allies, including Mary a yandere archetype and Tenko a shy love interest type, though the comedy remains firmly focused on the dialogue-driven exchanges between Murakami and whatever monster he is verbally dismantling.
The overarching plot builds toward a final confrontation with Sanmoto Gorozaemon, the King of Yokai himself. In a conclusion consistent with the series comedic formula, Murakami defeats this ultimate adversary not through battle but by exposing the kings secret enjoyment of spending time with humans. The manga runs for a total of two volumes comprising approximately twenty-one to twenty-four chapters, with the serialization concluding in November 2024.
