The ten kings of the underworld, known as the Ju-o, judge the souls of the dead based on their deeds in life. When the leader of the kings, Enma, accidentally lets 108 violent criminals’ souls escape from hell, the remaining kings must recapture them. King Shinkou, a cheerful and somewhat absentminded underworld judge with a green wolf-cut hairstyle and a crown marked with King, descends to the human world to round up the fugitive souls. There he encounters a young man named Onomura, a 20-year-old anime otaku with long black hair covering his right eye and glasses, who is being chased by one of the escaped souls. Onomura, a NEET living off his parents’ allowance, is terrified but eventually ends up housing Shinkou and his subordinate, the gruff hell guard Yamada, in his apartment as they search for the remaining 107 souls.

The story follows the chaotic daily life of this unlikely trio. Shinkou is optimistic and forgetful, often needing Onomura and Yamada to keep him on track. Another king, Sou Teiou, frequently causes trouble by carelessly using his powers without regard for living humans, nearly sending Onomura to hell by accident. Onomura’s love for anime and doujinshi leads to humorous clashes with the underworld’s rigid logic, and he gradually confronts his own complacency after encountering a particularly sinister criminal soul. The narrative is a fast-paced supernatural comedy filled with slapstick, bureaucracy jokes, and the absurdities of hell’s management.

The original three-chapter run was serialized in Monthly G Fantasy from November 2013 to January 2014. It was later rerun in the same magazine from October to December 2024 to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Tanaka Mai’s later series, Youkai Gakkou no Sensei Hajimemashita!, and a newly-drawn special chapter was added in January 2025. All chapters were compiled into a single volume released on January 27, 2025. The special chapter strongly implies that Karma Karma takes place in the same universe as the author’s better-known work, with crossover elements such as an in-universe band called ManDala that appears as merchandise or posters in both series. The volume also includes a short bonus comic newly drawn for the release.
