Ciarán Strange

Description
Ciarán Strange is a British-born, award-winning voice actor known for his work in English-language dubs of anime and video games. Born on August 8, 1989, in Selsey, West Sussex, England, he is an openly transgender performer whose career is marked by a distinctive vocal quality and a wide range of roles.

Before establishing himself in voice acting, Strange spent over a decade as a touring indie musician. From 2009 to 2020, he performed his original pop-punk-rock music, as well as covers and parodies, at conventions, festivals, and Pride celebrations across the US, UK, Canada, and Japan. His entry into voice acting was serendipitous, occurring after he was asked to read for a director while emceeing at an anime convention. This opportunity led to his debut role in the major video game Borderlands 3.

As a voice actor, Strange is recognized for his androgynous vocal fry and his ability to deliver high-octane emotional performances, ranging from comedic to dramatic. Another notable skill is his capacity to effortlessly switch between his natural British accent and a learned Standard American accent. His casting often sees him in roles that leverage this range, and he has been particularly open about the significance of being cast as the first out trans man to lead a sports anime, Ashito Aoi in Aoashi, a role he secured due to the energy and attitude he brought to the character.

Strange has accumulated an extensive list of credits in anime. He has taken on leading roles such as the titular character Richard in Requiem of the Rose King, and Evelogia in Everything for Demon King Evelogia. He has also portrayed Defrott in MARS RED, Kufo in By the Grace of the Gods, Luca Esposito in Astra Lost in Space, Lyde in Listeners, Dina in Hatena Illusion, Tamotsu Araki in ACTORS: Songs Connection, Odin in Warlords of Sigrdrifa, Satani in Dead Mount Death Play, Mithril Lid Pod in Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, and Fuuta in Reborn!: Here Comes a Vongola Family-Style School Trip. Beyond anime, his work includes the prominent role of a younger Denji in the English dub of Chainsaw Man, Pailing in The Apothecary Diaries, Sketchy in SK8 the Infinity, and various characters in the Borderlands video game series, including Lor (formerly Lorelei) in Borderlands 3 and Paladin Mike in Tiny Tina's Wonderlands. For his performance as Lor, he was a recipient of the UK Gayming Magazine's Character of the Year 2023 Award.

In addition to his voice acting and music careers, Strange is also an author. He has written and relaunched an LGBTQIA+ urban sci-fi novel titled Black Tie, which he describes as a gay romance thriller featuring an awkward protagonist in a world of superhumans.
