Description
The story follows an unnamed young man who is uniquely ill-suited for a life of adventure: his sensitivity to spiritual phenomena is six times greater than that of an average person, making him terrified of ghosts and monsters to a nearly crippling degree. One evening, his fears become reality when he encounters Mechako, the eccentric and energetic young leader of the Kaikigumi, a secretive organization responsible for managing and controlling the ghosts, yokai, and other supernatural creatures that threaten the human world.
Despite his overwhelming terror, the protagonist is reluctantly recruited by Mechako to help rebuild her organization, which has apparently fallen on hard times and lost its former influence. He finds himself dragged into a series of bizarre, spooky, yet oddly humorous encounters as Mechako attempts to restore the Kaikigumi to its former glory. The series is set in a contemporary Japanese city where the supernatural lurks just out of sight, and the narrative balances moments of genuine unease with a lighthearted, absurdist comedic tone. The protagonist's constant state of fear is played for laughs as he is forced to confront a parade of paranormal phenomena, from mischievous spirits to cursed dolls, all while assisting the group in its unconventional duties.
The core cast of the Kaikigumi includes Shurako and a character known as Doppelganger, alongside a living Cursed Doll, each bringing their own peculiar methods to the team's operations. A prominent narrator also guides the audience through the strange events, adding to the show's distinctive atmosphere. As the protagonist reluctantly helps the group handle one case after another, he is drawn deeper into a world where the line between the scary and the ridiculous is constantly blurred, leading to all sorts of supernatural shenanigans as the Kaikigumi tries to make its comeback. The anime is produced by animation studio C-Station under the direction of Yutaka Hirata, with scripts overseen by Mutsumi Ito.
