Description
Jura Basil Elden serves as the secondary leader of the Dread fighting force aboard the Nirvana, though she holds this position with less experience and tactical skill than her superior, Meia Gisborn. She is a young woman with long, flowing blonde hair that she considers her pride and joy, maintaining it with great care and displaying a significant degree of vanity about her appearance. Her personality is initially marked by a superficial and self-absorbed nature, as she craves attention and becomes jealous when she is not the center of it. She has a spoiled demeanor and is often dependent on her close companion, Barnette Orangello, which contributes to her immaturity and lack of leadership experience. Despite these flaws, Jura is fundamentally an optimist with a bright and energetic view on life.

In the narrative of Vandread: The Second Stage, Jura's primary motivation shifts from personal glory to more complex and occasionally comedic goals. Early on, she is driven by a desire to unite her Dread fighter with Hibiki Tokai's Vanguard mecha, inspired by the impressive results achieved by Dita and Meia, hoping to create something equally magnificent. As the series progresses into the second stage, her focus becomes fixated on the novel concept of reproduction, leading her to spend considerable effort trying to convince Hibiki to have a baby with her, viewing it as a prestigious achievement. Her role in the crew is that of a capable but sometimes unreliable pilot whose vanity often clashes with the practicalities of their situation.

Her key relationships define much of her character arc. She shares a deep, intimate bond with Barnette, who is implied to be her lover and who often serves as an anchor to Jura's more excessive whims. Her dynamic with Hibiki is a central point of interaction; she finds him useful for her goals, whether for forming a powerful Vandread or for his role as one of the first men she has encountered, which sparks her intense curiosity about childbirth. Jura holds a rivalry with the more skilled and composed Meia, which is compounded by Meia's reluctance to cede command and allow Jura to gain genuine leadership experience. Over the course of the series, Jura shows significant development. While she remains vain, the loss of a comrade, Gascongue, in The Second Stage forces her to become more mature and dependable, revealing her value as a true comrade and friend beneath her superficial exterior. She proves her reliability in combat and even takes it upon herself to meddle in the romantic problems of others, such as trapping Dita and Hibiki together to force a resolution to their awkwardness.

In combat, Jura pilots a red Dread, which is one of the few capable of merging with Hibiki's Vanguard to form a unique Vandread. Her combined form is known as Vandread Jura, or the Red Claw. This mecha resembles a large red crab with long, flexible claws and green disks that orbit around it. Unlike the more humanoid or offensive Vandreads, Jura's machine is defensive in nature, embodying a Stone Wall strategy. Its primary ability is its enhanced shielding system, generated by the orbiting disks, which can create an energy barrier large enough to protect an entire planet or small enough to surround the mecha itself. This barrier can also be used to manipulate objects, such as pulling in lifeboats for protection or expelling large quantities of water, and the disks can function as independent cannons to fire on multiple enemies from different angles. When not piloting her Dread, Jura typically carries a rapier or saber at her belt, though she is seldom seen using it in battle.
