Description
Keiichi Morisato is the central human protagonist of the story, introduced as a 21-year-old student at the Nekomi Institute of Technology and an active member of the university's Motor Club. His life takes an extraordinary turn when he accidentally dials the Goddess Relief Office, leading to the arrival of the goddess Belldandy. Convinced that his seniors from the Motor Club are playing an elaborate prank on him, a common occurrence given his reputation as a long-suffering target, Keiichi makes a wish for a girl like Belldandy to stay by his side forever. This wish is granted, binding their fates together and forming the core of the story.

In terms of personality, Keiichi is foremost depicted as a genuinely nice and kind-hearted individual. He dislikes seeing anyone hurt and strives to be helpful, often putting others' needs before his own. He is generally honest and truthful, and though he can sometimes be gullible, he is not unintelligent; he has demonstrated a sharp mind, such as quickly solving a complex exam filled with chemical and mechanical questions. While he deeply loves Belldandy, he is famously indecisive and struggles to express his feelings openly, which becomes a recurring personal challenge. He lives in a constant state of being the "Only Sane Man," serving as a calm and grounded center amidst the chaotic magic, divine mishaps, and demonic interference caused by the goddesses and other supernatural beings in his household. A significant revelation in the manga explains that his chaste and reserved nature was partly influenced by a powerful seal placed on him by Heaven to suppress his romantic desires, a measure taken to maintain the separation between gods and mortals despite his contract with Belldandy.

Keiichi's role in the narrative is that of the relatable human anchor in a world of gods and demons. He is Belldandy's steadfast partner, and his love for her is often the key to resolving major conflicts. He provides a sense of normalcy and a moral compass, often acting as a mediator or the voice of reason for the more impulsive goddesses, Skuld and Urd, and their adversaries. His motivations are largely driven by a desire to protect his loved ones and maintain his relationship with Belldandy, often pushing himself to extraordinary lengths out of sheer willpower and devotion.

Key relationships define his life. His bond with Belldandy is the central romantic relationship of the series, characterized by deep mutual respect, loyalty, and affection, despite his difficulty articulating it. He becomes a surrogate older brother figure to Belldandy's younger sister, Skuld, looking out for her even when her inventions cause him trouble. He has a more teasing but caring dynamic with the older sister, Urd. Outside of the divine circle, he has a sister named Megumi Morisato. He is originally from the Kushiro subprefecture in Hokkaido, where his father, Keima, is a glassblower with a natural talent for motorcycle maintenance, and his mother, Takano, is an avid mah-jong player. He also shares a close, almost sibling-like bond with Chihiro Fujimi, his senior and owner of the repair shop Whirlwind where he eventually works.

Throughout the series, Keiichi shows notable development. He transitions from a shy, somewhat unlucky college student with little experience with women into a more reliable and confident individual. He begins as a doormat for his seniors but grows into a respected director of the Motor Club before passing the role on. After a delay involving a missing class, he graduates and begins working as a mechanic at the Whirlwind repair shop. His journey also involves learning to accept and manage the bizarre supernatural events that constantly surround him, growing from a bewildered everyman to someone who can face threats to the world with courage.

Regarding notable abilities, Keiichi possesses exceptional skills as a mechanic and is portrayed as an outstanding race car and motorcycle driver. These talents are key to his character and are highlighted during various competitive and life-threatening events. A more unique ability is his capacity to temporarily host angels, which are extensions of a goddess's power. Because of the pure love he receives from the goddesses around him, he was able to host Lind's angel, Cool Mint, and later the demon-angel hybrid, Blue Lance, who chose him because he was the only one to call her an angel rather than a former demon. He also has a notable inability to swim, a trait that persisted until he was accidentally influenced by the magical song of a race of mermaids.
