Description
Megane, whose real name is Satoshi, is a classmate of Ataru Moroboshi at Tomobiki High School and one of his frequent companions. Known by the nickname Megane, which means "glasses" or "four-eyes" in Japanese, he is the self-appointed leader and chairman of the Supreme Council of Lum's Stormtroopers, a group of boys dedicated to winning the affection of the alien Lum. Megane possesses a strong and assertive personality, often directing the group's schemes to gain Lum's attention, though his efforts are primarily for his own benefit rather than for the group's collective goal. He closely monitors the other Stormtroopers to ensure their unwavering loyalty to Lum and to prevent them from looking at other girls. Despite his frequent antagonism toward Ataru, particularly over Lum, Megane often spends his free time with Ataru, indicating a complicated friendship. He is intellectually inclined, displaying an impressive knowledge of poetry, history, mythology, philosophy, military equipment, and vehicles, with a particular interest in science fiction and socialist manifestos. Megane is prone to rambling philosophical musings and dramatic outbursts, and he often shows an affinity for extreme political ideologies like fascism and communism. His role in the story is primarily comedic, serving as part of the chaotic ensemble that creates obstacles and humorous situations for Ataru and Lum. Over the course of the series, Megane does not undergo significant personal development but remains a consistent source of over-the-top schemes and exaggerated loyalty to Lum. His notable abilities are not physical but intellectual and organizational, as he is capable of crafting elaborate plans and rallying the Stormtroopers, though these plans frequently backfire. In the original manga, Megane and his fellow Stormtroopers were initially minor background characters, but the 1981 anime adaptation greatly expanded their roles, making them recurring members of the main cast. In the 2022 reboot, their presence was reduced, returning them to a more background role closer to the original manga.
