Description
Belldandy is a Goddess First Class Type 2 Unlimited License, serving the Goddess Relief Agency by granting wishes to worthy humans. Her arrival on Earth follows Keiichi Morisato's accidental contact with her agency and his wish for "a goddess like you to stay by my side forever," creating a permanent contractual bond central to her story.

She is one of the three Norns, representing the present. Her name originates from the Old Norse "Verðandi," transliterated into Japanese as "Berudandī" and localized as Belldandy. Her sisters are Urd, the eldest Norn embodying the past, and Skuld, the youngest embodying the future. Their familial background later includes their mother, the goddess Ansuz, who holds a rivalry with the demon queen Hild. Urd's differing powers and occasional rule-breaking stem from her half-demon heritage.

Belldandy embodies kindness and empathy, consistently seeking to ease suffering without bearing grudges. She readily forgives adversaries unless Keiichi is threatened, triggering intense protectiveness. Her deep attachment to Keiichi makes her vulnerable to jealousy and insecurity, especially during misunderstandings implying his rejection; this emotional fragility serves as a plot catalyst, exploited by antagonists in the movie. Early manga portrayals show her as slightly more impulsive and less naive, while later iterations emphasize serene compassion.

Her divine abilities encompass mastery over wind and air, teleportation via mirrors, telepathy, levitation, aura perception, animal communication, and healing through accelerated metabolism. She wears a power-limiter earring to suppress her full strength, preventing potential planetary destruction. One instance of unsealing, during the Lord of Terror arc, sees her reconstruct a destroyed temple using "one ten-millionth" of her capacity. Non-combat skills include peerless singing that pacifies mythical beasts, exceptional culinary talent, and mechanical aptitude. A metabolic quirk causes soda to intoxicate her while alcohol has no effect.

Her angel, Holy Bell, hatches from an egg, amplifies her magic, and mirrors her physical and emotional state—manifesting as comatose and crystal-encrusted when Belldandy suffers a viral infection in the movie.

Character development occurs through her relationship with Keiichi. Initial interactions feature chaste affection due to a celestial mental block suppressing his lust, later removed by Belldandy to save his life. Her competitiveness surfaces during racing events and leadership disputes. The manga concludes with the revelation that Keiichi's initial wish constituted a divine-law marriage proposal, formalizing their eternal union. Interactions with her sisters also drive growth: she mediates Urd's rebelliousness and Skuld's initial hostility, fostering strong familial loyalty. Post-series spin-offs depict her navigating human challenges like job hunting during economic downturns.
