Description
Kogoro Mouri operates the Mouri Detective Agency in Beika Town. A former police officer in Tokyo Metropolitan Police Division One alongside Inspector Megure, he possesses excellent marksmanship and judo proficiency from his time as the ace of Beika University's judo team, though his investigative skills were considered mediocre on the force. His departure from the police coincided with his separation from his wife, Eri Kisaki, a first-class lawyer; they remain legally married after ten years apart. Their daughter, Ran Mouri, lives with him and actively tries to reconcile her parents.

At Ran's insistence, he reluctantly takes in Conan Edogawa, secretly the shrunken teenager Shinichi Kudo. Conan covertly assists investigations by using a stun-gun wristwatch to tranquilize Kogoro during cases, then employs a voice-changing bowtie to deliver deductions through Kogoro's unconscious form. This results in Kogoro gaining fame as "Sleeping Kogoro." Police, including Megure, often prefer this unconscious version, finding his conscious deductions flawed or unprofessional.

Kogoro exhibits a lazy, unprofessional demeanor in routine cases, often jumping to conclusions or making sarcastic remarks. He flirts with attractive women, idolizing pop star Yoko Okino, whose merchandise decorates his office and home. This behavior embarrasses Ran and contributes to Eri's reluctance to reconcile. He is a heavy smoker and drinker, with hobbies including horse race betting, mahjong, and baseball. Despite these flaws, he possesses a strong sense of justice and demonstrates genuine detective competence when cases involve Eri or Ran. In such instances, his focus sharpens, displaying improved logical reasoning and interpersonal insight, though his skills remain below Conan's level.

In "The Miracle of Excalibur," Kogoro investigates a missing baseball bat he believes was switched during a drinking party. His drunken recollection involves swinging a bat at Beika Park's baseball field and passing out. He confronts a young baseball player, Minae, attempting to pull a bat embedded in the ground – part of a plan by Professor Agasa and her coach to boost her confidence through a King Arthur-inspired legend. Kogoro insists the bat is his, leading Conan to tranquilize him to prevent interference. While unconscious, Conan uses Kogoro's voice to explain the bat's backstory to detectives Takagi and Chiba, maintaining the "Sleeping Kogoro" facade. This highlights his persistent unawareness of Conan's manipulations.

Kogoro remains professionally reliant on Conan's hidden assistance yet capable of genuine deduction when personally motivated. His flaws – vanity, laziness, and vices – contrast with his underlying integrity in protecting life and upholding justice.
