Description
Satoshi, known as Megane, is Ataru Moroboshi's classmate and self-appointed leader of Lum's Stormtroopers, a fan club dedicated to protecting Lum's purity from Ataru's advances. He has been part of Ataru's kindergarten friend group alongside Chibi, Perm, and Kakugari. Lum's arrival shifted this dynamic; Megane and his friends became infatuated, forming the Stormtroopers to undermine Ataru's relationship, hoping Lum might choose one of them. Despite antagonizing Ataru, they occasionally socialize during leisure activities like visiting gyūdon restaurants.
As the Stormtroopers' "Supreme Council Chairman," Megane displays intense idiosyncrasies, including a manic obsession with Nazi Germany paraphernalia and a tendency toward eccentric, escalating speeches. He possesses broad knowledge in poetry, history, mythology, philosophy, and science-fiction, though his shortsightedness and ego often undermine his intellect. He is writing a book titled *History of Tomobiki*. Megane is the only human character shown consuming food prepared by Lum. Physically cowardly and weak, he frequently suffers violence from supernatural entities and classmates, driving him to develop engineering skills. He built two armored suits (M HMS-01 and M HMS-02) for protection; both offered some durability but proved ineffective in combat.
In broader franchise media, Megane's role diverges from the manga, where he and other Stormtroopers largely disappeared early, their functions absorbed by characters like Kōsuke Shirai. He remained an anime staple, making cameos in subsequent works and appearing in the *Inuyasha* spin-off *Yashahime* as part of a hoodlum gang. The 2022 *Urusei Yatsura* series addresses him solely as Satoshi, depicting him with black hair instead of brown. A parallel universe storyline featured a female Megane whose overt admiration for a female Lum caused discomfort. His armored suits, introduced in the 1983 anime, resemble the "Protect Gear" from Mamoru Oshii's later work *Kerberos Panzer Cop*, suggesting possible design influence.
