Description
Shinobu Miyake is a classmate and childhood friend of Ataru Moroboshi in Tomobiki High School's Class 2-4, having known him since their kindergarten days. She was initially his girlfriend and promised to marry him if he could win a game of tag against the Oni princess Lum, an event held to decide Earth's fate. When Ataru won, his victory cry was misinterpreted by Lum as a proposal, leading her to move in with and become engaged to him. This event fractured Shinobu's relationship with Ataru, though he continued his attempts to date her, which were invariably interrupted by Lum, causing further misunderstandings and provoking Shinobu's fury.
Ordinarily, Shinobu presents herself as a neat, clean, sweet, and petite young woman with a calm and kind demeanor. However, when angered, jealous, or frustrated—most often by Ataru's lecherous behavior or his interactions with Lum—she exhibits superhuman strength. This power typically manifests in her hurling school desks or other heavy objects, usually aimed at Ataru. The ability is triggered by her emotional state in situations involving Lum or Ataru, and Lum's presence on Earth is linked to this power; when Lum once left the planet, Shinobu temporarily lost her super strength.
After Lum and the wealthy Shūtarō Mendō transferred into Tomobiki High, Shinobu's romantic focus shifted. She developed a strong affection for Mendō, captivated by his fortune and handsome appearance, and largely abandoned her pursuit of Ataru. However, Mendō's own feelings for Lum and his similar lecherous tendencies prevented their relationship from progressing beyond occasional dates and mutual, though shallow, interest. Shinobu eventually grew disillusioned with both Ataru and Mendō, recognizing their flaws and accepting them only as friends.
Shinobu endured persistent misfortune in romance, frequently attracting monsters and perverts. Near the series' end, she met Inaba, an employee of the Destiny Production Management Bureau who wore a rabbit costume. During a mission to retrieve a flower from a space-time forest, Inaba revealed his true motive was simply to spend time with her. The flower bloomed through their true love, and they began a steady relationship, often seen sharing tea, which finally resolved her long history of romantic struggles.
Her relationships with others include an initial dislike for Lum, whom she saw as an obstacle to her relationship with Ataru. This animosity faded over time into a more amicable, classroom-based interaction. She also befriended Ryūnosuke Fujinami, initially mistaking her for a boy but later supporting her embrace of femininity. Her name, Shinobu, means "to endure," reflecting her perseverance through romantic disappointments, while her surname, Miyake, means "three residences."
