Description
Hitomi is a genetically engineered second-generation Bioroid, designed with suppressed aggression and enhanced biology for peacekeeping. Though her birth year is recorded as 2094, she appears in her mid-to-late twenties despite potentially being decades older due to the Bioroid aging process and life-extension treatments. She serves as Olympus' Vice Minister, a role prepared for by her pre-birth education in political sciences. Her duties include recruiting personnel for ESWAT, Olympus' elite counter-terrorism unit, leading the mission to rescue Deunan Knute from the Badlands, and aiding Deunan's integration into Olympus society.

Genetically sharing DNA with Carl Knute, Deunan's father, Hitomi possesses a biological connection to her. Her Bioroid nature regulates her emotional range, rendering her incapable of hatred or anger while maintaining a childlike and cheerful demeanor. She exhibits distinct curiosity about human emotions, particularly love, but finds expressions of hatred—especially anti-Bioroid sentiment from groups like the O.R.A. or Human Liberation Front—profoundly disturbing. She occasionally relies on external guidance, referencing a customized "Human/Bioroid Interactions" book to navigate social conversations in the manga.

Bioroids depend on periodic life-extension treatments due to inhibited reproductive systems. An attack destroying a Bioroid care center left Hitomi, who had delayed her treatment by three days, facing rapid aging and potential death. Deunan Knute saved her by accessing the "Appleseed" data, which reactivated Hitomi's reproductive functions and stabilized her condition. Hitomi's DNA also functions as a biological key ("Barrier Maiden") to the Gaia supercomputer, Olympus' central AI, making her a target. Antagonists like Calon kidnapped her to deactivate Gaia in the OVA, and her name was later used as an access code to disable Olympus' rogue mobile fortress defense system.

In "Appleseed: Ex Machina," Hitomi encounters Deunan after returning from the World Treaty, reluctantly informing her of Briareos' injury and introducing the "Connexus" social trend. During Briareos' unexplained berserk episode, she assists his investigation into Dr. Richard Kestner, uncovering missing data about Kestner's work with Halcon. This leads Briareos to take her hostage during his escape to confront Kestner. The manga depicts her developing a platonic co-parenting relationship with Artemis' children after Artemis moves in, showcasing her nurturing side despite childcare frustrations.

In "Appleseed XIII," Hitomi facilitates introductions between Deunan Knute and Bioroid scientist Deia Chades and hosts Deunan at her residence. Across all media, Hitomi often experiences misfortune, including being captured, used in schemes, or neglected by her love interest Yoshitsune Miyamoto, contributing to her "Butt-Monkey" narrative status.
