Description
Shinichi Kudo, a 16-year-old high school detective from Beika City, solves complex cases that stump professional investigators, earning him titles like "Heisei Holmes" and "Savior of the police force." Born to mystery novelist Yusaku Kudo and former actress Yukiko Kudo, his deductive skills surfaced early; at age four, he solved the mystery of his father's disappearance by interpreting subtle clues. His childhood bond with Ran Mouri began in kindergarten when he protected her from bullies while simultaneously uncovering an abduction plot by their teacher.
Investigating suspicious men in black at Tropical Land, Shinichi was ambushed and forced to ingest the experimental poison APTX 4869. Instead of killing him, it shrank his body to that of a six-year-old. Concealing his identity from the criminal Black Organization, he adopted the alias Conan Edogawa—a portmanteau of Arthur Conan Doyle and Edogawa Rampo—and moved in with Ran and her father, private detective Kogoro Mouri. Using gadgets invented by family friend Professor Agasa, like a voice-changing bowtie and tranquilizer watch, he discreetly solves cases by impersonating Kogoro or others, gathering intelligence on the organization. He enrolls at Teitan Elementary, forming the Detective Boys with classmates Ayumi Yoshida, Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya, and Genta Kojima.
Initially arrogant and attention-seeking, Shinichi’s transformation forces humility. He retains his sharp intellect, broad knowledge of forensics, fluency in English with some German and Italian, and athletic prowess—particularly soccer, where his accuracy aids unconventional problem-solving. He plays violin but sings poorly. His moral code prioritizes justice over convenience; he refuses to let culprits commit suicide, believing it equates to murder. Though emotionally reserved, he deeply values human life, a conviction tested by failures to prevent deaths. His relationship with Ran evolves from childhood friendship to romance. After failed attempts to confess while temporarily reverted, he admits his feelings in London, and Ran reciprocates during a school trip.
Key developments include partnering with Ai Haibara (Shiho Miyano), the APTX 4869 creator who also shrank. She provides temporary antidotes and aids his fight against the Black Organization. Allies like Osaka detective Heiji Hattori, FBI agent Shuichi Akai, and phantom thief Kaito Kid—revealed as his cousin—bolster his efforts. In the OVA "Joshi Kōsei Tantei Suzuki Sonoko no Jikenbō," he assists Ran’s friend Sonoko Suzuki in crafting a dying message for her stage play, deducing that directional compass points ("NEWS") and grease stains expose the culprit.
Shinichi’s mission remains twofold: dismantle the Black Organization and find a permanent antidote. He collaborates with global agencies but keeps his identity secret to protect loved ones, balancing his dual life as Conan while awaiting restoration.
