Description
Koji Kabuto arrives in UFO Robo Grendizer after the events of Great Mazinger. Returning to Japan from overseas studies focused on UFO technology and space science, he designs and constructs a personal flying saucer, the TFO (Terrestrial Flying Object). His aim is to establish peaceful contact with extraterrestrials based on reported UFO sightings, demonstrating his scientific aptitude and utilizing his family's technological legacy for humanitarian purposes.
His initial optimism about alien life clashes with warnings from Duke Fleed concerning the hostile Vegan Empire. Koji dismisses these concerns and attempts first contact, only to be attacked by Vegan forces. Duke Fleed, piloting Grendizer, rescues him and reveals his true identity as an alien prince. Learning Duke's history, Koji becomes involved with the Space Science Laboratory near the Makiba ranch. He develops a rivalry with Duke, fueled by their differing personalities and Koji's attempts to gain the attention of Hikaru Makiba, the ranch owner's daughter.
Though no longer piloting a giant robot like Mazinger Z, Koji actively participates in the conflict against the Vegan Empire. He initially pilots his TFO in combat, but it proves underpowered. After its destruction, he designs and pilots the more capable Double Spazer, providing direct aerial support during Grendizer's battles. His role transitions from primary protagonist to a key supporting character and ally to Duke Fleed, often motivating Duke during periods of doubt or capture.
Koji exhibits skepticism and opposition when an alliance is proposed between Earth forces and the underground-dwelling Emperor of Darkness against the Vegan Empire. His objections stem from the Empire's past atrocities against his allies and family. He reluctantly participates yet maintains vigilance. This culminates in his accidental dropping of the Emperor's life-sustaining case during an escort mission, leading to the Emperor's death. Later, he becomes concerned when Duke Fleed, disillusioned by human conflict and the Vegan threat, considers seizing control of Earth to impose peace. Koji actively resists this shift, viewing Duke's potential authoritarianism as a new threat, and ultimately breaks free from Duke's control during the final Raaga incident.
His relationships include persistently pursuing Hikaru Makiba with flirtatious advances, typically countered by her father's protectiveness. His interactions with Duke Fleed evolve from initial rivalry and arguments into a solid, respectful friendship forged through shared battles, though they still clash ideologically. His friendship with Sayaka Yumi continues, and he works alongside her at the Space Science Laboratory. Following the climatic battle involving Grendizer and Raaga, Koji survives alongside Hikaru Makiba, searching for other survivors after a devastating tidal wave.
