Description
L is the world’s most renowned consulting detective, operating under the alias L Lawliet. In the story L change the WorLd, set during the final 23 days of his life after the conclusion of the Kira case, his background is explored further through his actions and interactions. He was raised at Wammy's House, an orphanage that cultivates gifted children, and has since built a legendary reputation for solving the most complex crimes. His true identity remains largely hidden from the public, and he communicates with authorities through his assistant Watari.
L’s personality is defined by an extraordinary intellect, an analytical and methodical approach to problems, and a set of distinctive eccentricities. He habitually sits in a crouched position, consumes large quantities of sweets, and appears disheveled, yet these quirks reflect a mind that prioritizes function over social norms. He is calm under pressure, highly logical, and possesses a dry wit. In this story, his human side is emphasized: he displays genuine care for the people around him, particularly the two children he takes under his protection. He is not cold but rather reserved, and his decisions are guided by a strong moral compass and a commitment to justice, even when facing his own mortality.
L’s primary motivation in L change the WorLd is to stop a bioterrorist organization from releasing a deadly virus that could wipe out much of humanity. Knowing his time is limited, he dedicates his remaining days to this final case, driven by a sense of duty and a desire to protect innocent lives. He also shows a personal investment in safeguarding Maki Nikaido, the daughter of the scientist who created the virus’s antidote, and a nameless Thai boy with exceptional mathematical talent. His role in this story is that of a protector and mentor, actively engaging in physical action—driving, escaping traps, and confronting criminals—a departure from his usual behind-the-scenes investigative work.
Key relationships include his bond with Watari, his loyal handler and father figure, whose death leaves L isolated. He forms a temporary but meaningful connection with Maki, offering her emotional support and guidance, and with the boy, whom he later christens Near and places in the care of Wammy’s House, effectively grooming him as a successor. The story also references his previous rivalry with Light Yagami, and L’s thoughts on that case provide insight into his perspective on justice and human nature.
Throughout the narrative, L demonstrates notable abilities beyond deduction: he is a skilled computer hacker, can solve cryptic puzzles and mathematical problems, and adapts quickly to dangerous situations. He also shows a surprising physical capability when the situation demands it. His development lies in the revelation of his more nurturing and selfless side, as he uses his final days not for his own gain but to save others and leave a legacy in the form of Near. L’s character in this story is a fuller portrait of a genius who, despite his quirks and solitude, is deeply human and resolute in his pursuit of what is right.
