Description
The 2009 live-action film Abashiri Ikka: The Movie is an adaptation of the manga series created by Go Nagai. The story centers on the Abashiri clan, a small but notoriously violent and feared family of criminals. After a devastating confrontation with the state, the family patriarch, Daemon Abashiri, is forced to relocate his clan to a lawless zone at the foot of Mount Fuji called the Nippon Extra-Territory. It is within this criminal haven that the family has a long-running and violent feud with a rival clan led by the sinister Danjuro Namakubi.
The protagonist is Kikunosuke Abashiri, the family’s sole daughter, who is a formidable fighter often seen wielding a katana. The film introduces a unique science-fiction twist when the rival clan manages to have the Abashiris secretly implanted with special anti-crime microchips. These chips are designed to immobilize a family member whenever they entertain a criminal thought, giving their enemies a significant tactical advantage.
Following the family's defeat and her own capture, Kikunosuke is enrolled at Paradise Academy, a prestigious boarding school run by Danjuro Namakubi. Unbeknownst to her father, who hoped she would receive a proper education, the school is a brutal and corrupt institution where teachers are homicidal and students are forced to fight for their survival. Kikunosuke has also had her memory erased and has been subjected to brainwashing that causes her extreme headaches whenever she attempts to use violence, effectively neutralizing her greatest strength. At the academy, she befriends a defenseless new student named Yuki, who becomes a target for bullies. As Kikunosuke navigates this deadly environment, she must confront her past and find a way to overcome the mental conditioning that suppresses her violent nature. The narrative builds toward a violent confrontation when the rest of the Abashiri family learns of her danger and storms the school to rescue her from Namakubi’s clutches.
