Description
In the world of Gekkan! Nanmono Anime, literally everything is a living, breathing creature. Animals, plants, food items, and even ordinary household objects are all anthropomorphized characters that go about their daily lives side by side. This short-form original net animation is based on the Nandemo Ikimono characters created by illustrator and character designer Yuri Yokomizo. The setting is a soft, whimsical space where a seaweed-wrapped rice ball, a crab, a shrimp, or a river otter can be found simply existing together, engaging in tiny, low-stakes interactions and gentle humor.
The main cast includes a variety of these personified beings. Kani the crab is voiced by Shiori Izawa, while Ebi the shrimp is voiced by Satsumi Matsuda. Nori Onigiri, the seaweed rice ball, is brought to life by Fairouz Ai, and other characters include Kojima (Haruka Shiraishi), Daisansei Uo (Youko Hikasa), Rakko the otter (Aya Uchida), and Kawauso (Ikue Ootani). Rounding out the principal cast are Dame Gitsune (Akari Kitou) and a zookeeper-like figure named Shiikuin-san (Nobuhiko Okamoto).
The narrative follows no overarching plot or dramatic conflict. Instead, each episode is a standalone, one-minute vignette that captures small moments from the lives of these characters. The series, animated by studio Lesprit, is designed for easy consumption on digital platforms. Episodes are released monthly across various social media services including Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and the Japanese streaming service ABEMA. The tone remains warm and easygoing throughout, offering a purely slice-of-life experience that focuses on the simple charm of seeing a sentient object or a tiny animal navigate its world.
