Description
Shanks, known as "Red-Haired Shanks," leads the Red Hair Pirates as their chief and rules as one of the Four Emperors in the New World. Born 39 years ago to the Figarland Family of World Nobles, he is the son of Figarland Garling and younger twin brother of Figarland Shamrock. Discovered as an infant inside a treasure chest by the Roger Pirates at God Valley, Shanks was adopted by Gol D. Roger's crew. He later echoed this by finding his adoptive daughter Uta under identical circumstances. Despite his Celestial Dragon heritage, Shanks renounced his birthright and status to remain in the lower world.

He began his pirate journey as an apprentice on the Oro Jackson under Gol D. Roger, alongside Buggy. During this time, he wore the straw hat later gifted to Monkey D. Luffy. His apprenticeship involved major conflicts like the Edd War against the Golden Lion Pirates and clashes with the Whitebeard Pirates, where he first met Marshall D. Teach. Teach inflicted the three distinctive scars across Shanks' left eye in an unspecified later encounter. Following Roger's execution 24 years ago, Shanks founded his own crew, recruiting Benn Beckman, Yasopp, and Lucky Roux. His bounty eventually reached 4,048,900,000 berries, cementing his formidable reputation.

Twelve years before the current timeline, while residing in Foosha Village, Shanks inspired a young Monkey D. Luffy to become a pirate. He accidentally provided Luffy with the Gomu Gomu no Mi Devil Fruit and sacrificed his left arm to save him from a Sea King. Shanks entrusted Luffy with his straw hat as part of a promise to reunite once Luffy became a great pirate. During this period, Shanks also adopted Uta after discovering her in a treasure chest during a raid. He raised her as his daughter and crew musician aboard the Red Force.

Events in "One Piece Film: Red" unveiled critical details about Shanks' relationship with Uta and previously unknown abilities. Twelve years prior to the film, Uta accidentally unleashed the demon Tot Musica on Elegia using her Sing-Sing Fruit powers, destroying the kingdom. Shanks and his crew claimed responsibility for the devastation to shield Uta's future, enabling her music career without Marine pursuit. This sacrifice led Uta to misunderstand that Shanks abandoned her. During the film's climax, Shanks demonstrated "Observation Killing," a technique using his Conqueror's Haki to negate opponents' Observation Haki. His fighting style involves coating his sword Gryphon in a fiery aura, though the power's exact nature remains unspecified.

Shanks intervened directly in Elegia when Uta, destabilized by wake-shroom poisoning, summoned Tot Musica again. He protected her from Marine attacks led by Admiral Akainu and coordinated with Luffy to defeat the demon across both real and dream worlds. After Tot Musica's defeat, Shanks reconciled with Uta as she sacrificed herself to return all trapped souls to reality. His diplomatic influence was noted when the Five Elders discussed Uta's threat level, acknowledging her Figarland family connection as a factor in their deliberations.

Personality-wise, Shanks maintains a laid-back and fun-loving demeanor, frequently hosting banquets with his crew. He avoids unnecessary conflict but exhibits zero tolerance for threats against allies or innocent civilians. This is demonstrated when he confronted Admiral Ryokugyu for attacking Wano's citizens and when he allowed the annihilation of Eustass Kid's crew for threatening his territory. His ability to broker ceasefires, such as ending the Marineford War, underscores his formidable reputation and diplomatic capability.
