Description
Cher Degré is a central human character, introduced as a scientist working in a laboratory in Freeze City. Her primary responsibility is the study of Cheza, the enigmatic Flower Maiden, whose existence is key to the legend of Paradise. Cher is deeply fascinated by Cheza, and her desire to understand the Flower Maiden's purpose and biological composition drives much of her initial involvement in the story. She treats Cheza with a level of empathy and scientific curiosity, viewing her not just as a subject but as a unique individual.

Cher's professional dedication comes at a significant personal cost. She was formerly married to Hubb Lebowski, a detective, but their marriage ended in divorce. Her work with Cheza became more important than their relationship, illustrating a personality that is highly focused, perhaps to the point of obsession, when it comes to her research. However, this does not mean she is cold or unfeeling. Beneath her reserved and professional exterior, she still harbors feelings for her ex-husband, though she is initially unable or unwilling to admit this to herself or to him.

When Lord Darcia the Third steals Cheza from the laboratory, Cher's motivations shift from academic study to a more active and personal pursuit. She abandons her post and joins the military's search effort to track down the Flower Maiden. This marks a turning point, transforming her from a passive observer within a controlled environment to a determined and proactive individual venturing into the dangerous outside world. Her journey becomes one of recovery and redemption, as she seeks not only to retrieve Cheza but also to confront the consequences of her past choices.

Throughout the story, Cher's path crosses with the wolves searching for Paradise, as well as with Hubb, who has left his own life behind to find her. Her relationship with Hubb is a key element of her character development. Their separation and eventual reunion force Cher to confront her personal failings and the emotional walls she has built. She progresses from a woman who prioritized her work over everything else to one who must reassess her values in the face of loss, danger, and the apocalyptic events unfolding around her.

Cher holds no supernatural abilities. Her primary strengths are her scientific knowledge, analytical mind, and the determination she develops as she chases after Cheza. She is resourceful and persistent, using her intellect to understand the world's crumbling reality and to navigate the schemes of the Nobles. In the final OVA episodes, as the world races toward its end, Cher meets her demise. The vehicle she is in falls from a cliff, leading to her death. In her final moments, she is held by Hubb, their long and complicated journey ending in tragedy. Her body is then laid to rest in the water, a poignant and somber conclusion for a character defined by her searching and her sorrow.
