Description
Makoto Hyûga is a First Lieutenant at NERV and serves as one of the three primary computer technicians stationed at the organization's headquarters, alongside Maya Ibuki and Shigeru Aoba. He works within the Tactical Operations division and acts as the chief aide to its head, Misato Katsuragi. During operations against Angels, Hyûga remains in close proximity to Misato, providing technical support and relaying critical data. His role involves monitoring the Evangelion pilots, coordinating launch sequences, and operating the MAGI computer system during battles.
Hyûga is a diligent and resourceful worker who takes his responsibilities seriously. He has a somewhat nerdy disposition, often reading manga comics during his breaks, but he does not let this detract from his competence on the job. He demonstrates initiative and quick thinking in emergencies, such as when he pilots a plane to transport Evangelion Unit-01 during the Jet Alone incident or commandeers a loudspeaker truck to warn NERV Headquarters of an approaching Angel during a power outage.
His motivations are closely tied to his loyalty to Misato and his commitment to the mission. He assists her beyond his official duties, performing errands like picking up her laundry and calling her lazy for not doing it herself. When Misato investigates NERV's hidden agenda, Hyûga supports her by hacking into the Intelligence Department's records and borrowing classified information about Kaworu Nagisa from Ibuki. He also relays intelligence from a source in Shanghai regarding the construction of the Mass Production Evangelions.
Hyûga harbors a deep but restrained romantic attraction to Misato. He never acts on his feelings or interferes with her relationship with Ryoji Kaji. The closest he comes to expressing his affection is during a tense moment when he tells Misato, "It's okay, as long as I'm with you," in response to her order to detonate headquarters rather than allow Third Impact to occur. Misato appears aware of his feelings but does not discourage them. During the events of The End of Evangelion, this attraction is symbolically reciprocated when his transition guide takes Misato's form and kisses him just before he dissolves into LCL.
In the Rebuild of Evangelion films, Hyûga appears in a similar capacity in the first two movies. In Evangelion 3.0, he is shown on the bridge of the AAA Wunder alongside Aoba. Throughout his appearances, he remains a quietly competent technician who balances professionalism with personal devotion to Misato, and he is one of the few NERV personnel willing to act against the organization's secrets when necessary.
