Paragus is a Saiyan warrior and the father of Broly, introduced as a secondary antagonist in the 1993 animated film Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan. He belonged to the Saiyan race and held a position within the Saiyan military under King Vegeta. His background is defined by his son's extraordinary power, which drew the fear and suspicion of King Vegeta. Believing the infant Broly posed a threat, King Vegeta ordered that both father and son be executed, and the pair were cast out. When Frieza destroyed Planet Vegeta, the infant Broly instinctively created a protective sphere of his own energy that shielded Paragus and himself and carried them to safety on another world. Paragus survived and devoted himself to raising Broly, but his upbringing was shaped less by care than by a desire to turn his son into a weapon of revenge.

Paragus's personality is calculating, manipulative, and consumed by a long-nurtured grudge against the Saiyan royal family. He treats Broly primarily as a tool rather than as an independent person, conditioning his son to obey and suppressing his emotions and destructive impulses with technological controls. His treatment of Broly is harsh: he uses punishment to enforce obedience and forcibly curbs any loss of control, and an incident during Broly's adolescence left Paragus with a scarred left eye after his son struck him. Despite this, his devotion to revenge gave him a genuine if distorted attachment to his son, whom he sees as the only means to achieve his goals. His primary motivation is vengeance against Prince Vegeta, the son of the king who condemned him, and he is willing to deceive anyone, including the prince himself, to achieve it.

In the story of the film, Paragus lures Prince Vegeta and other warriors to New Planet Vegeta, presenting himself as a loyal subject who wishes to restore Vegeta to the Saiyan throne. In reality, the invitation is a trap. Paragus intends to use Broly to destroy Vegeta and the assembled warriors, and he has arranged circumstances, including the approach of a comet, to pressure his guests. His plan rests entirely on a control device made for him by a scientist, a crown that can restrain Broly's power and force him to obey commands. When Broly is confronted by the warriors, Paragus orders him to attack, but the plan unravels when Broly ceases to respond to the crown. Broly breaks free of the control, transforms into the Legendary Super Saiyan, and goes on a rampage. Paragus attempts to flee in an escape pod, but the berserk Broly hurls the pod into the approaching comet, killing him.

Paragus's key relationships all serve his scheme. With Broly, he is a father figure whose authority is built on conditioning and fear, and his death marks the complete failure of that control. With Vegeta, he is a deceiver who feigns loyalty while plotting murder. With the Z Fighters, he is an adversary who uses their presence to further his revenge. His development in the film traces the collapse of a careful scheme: the more Broly's power grows, the less Paragus's machinery and manipulation can contain it, and his death comes about directly because of the force he tried to command.

As a fighter, Paragus is not especially powerful, and he does not rely on combat ability. His notable abilities are strategic: deception, planning, and survival, along with a thorough understanding of Saiyan politics and psychology. He is also the operator of the controlling crown, a piece of technology that lets him pacify, restrain, and direct Broly, making him dangerous not through his own strength but through the power he can aim at others. His role in the film is that of a man whose obsession with revenge turned his own son into both his instrument and, ultimately, the cause of his downfall.
