Description
Genma Saotome practices martial arts and is father to Ranma Saotome. He trained alongside Soun Tendo under master Happosai, though both later sealed Happosai in a cave due to harsh treatment, subsequently establishing their own schools. Genma embarked on a prolonged training journey with his son Ranma to hone their martial arts, culminating in a trip to China's cursed Jusenkyo springs. There, he fell into the Spring of the Drowned Panda, cursing him to transform into a giant panda when splashed with cold water. Hot water returns him to human form. He generally exhibits minimal concern about this curse, frequently exploiting his panda form to evade problems or responsibilities.

Before this journey, Genma made a pact with his wife Nodoka Saotome, promising to raise Ranma into a "man among men." The agreement stipulated that both father and son would commit ritual suicide via seppuku should this goal fail. Returning to Japan, Genma resides at the Tendo dojo to fulfill an arranged marriage between Ranma and Soun Tendo's daughter Akane, aiming to preserve the legacy of the Anything-Goes Martial Arts School. He actively conceals his panda curse from Nodoka, who remains unaware of his dual identity for much of the series.

Genma frequently acts cowardly and self-interested, willing to abandon or betray Ranma when advantageous. His behavior includes trading the infant Ranma for food, abandoning his son during crises, and prioritizing meals over familial loyalty. Despite professing martial arts honor, he regularly employs underhanded tactics like theft or evasion. His gluttony often overrides rational judgment or commitments.

As a martial artist, Genma possesses significant combat prowess, incorporating unconventional techniques into the Anything-Goes style. He developed the Umisenken school for stealth and ambush attacks and the Yamasenken school for disorienting opponents or delivering lethal strikes. He created these techniques as survival methods during hardship but sealed them away due to their dangerous effectiveness. His panda form amplifies his physical strength and agility, enabling competitive battles against formidable adversaries like Ranma. He can briefly channel intense battle auras akin to Happosai, though exhaustion limits this ability.

Genma’s relationship with Ranma is marked by mutual distrust, manipulation, and physical confrontations, often involving grappling or panda-form restraints. He avoids Nodoka for years, fearing the seppuku pact due to Ranma's gender-curse. When Nodoka eventually discovers their curses and identities, she accepts them on the condition that Ranma retains masculine interests and combat demeanor. This resolution allows Genma to reunite with his wife and son as a family unit without further concealment.

Throughout various story arcs involving engagements, rivalries, and magical encounters, Genma consistently prioritizes self-preservation and comfort over parental or mentorship duties. His martial arts knowledge occasionally surfaces to assist Ranma, though typically under coercion or incidental circumstances. The character maintains these core traits across manga, television series, original video animations, and films.
