Description
Ryō Saeba operates as the mercenary and private detective "City Hunter" in Shinjuku, Tokyo. The sole survivor of a childhood plane crash in Central America, he remembers neither his birth name nor parents. Rescued by guerrillas, he was raised by Japanese soldier Shin Kaibara, who named him and trained him rigorously in combat. During the civil war, Kaibara forcibly administered the experimental drug Angel Dust to young Ryō. This near-fatal event granted him heightened physical and mental capabilities, contributing to his formidable reputation.

Ryō typically displays a frivolous, lecherous personality, constantly pursuing women ("Mokkori"). This behavior frequently provokes violent retaliation from his partner, Kaori Makimura, wielding her oversized mallet. Yet during missions or threats, he shifts instantly to intense focus and tactical brilliance. His primary weapon is a Colt Python .357 Magnum, famed for his precision "one-hole shot" technique. He also exhibits exceptional skill in hand-to-hand combat, strategic planning, and marksmanship.

After the war, Ryō worked as a "sweeper" mercenary in the US alongside mentors like Mary’s father and partners such as Mick Angel. He later moved to Japan, founding the City Hunter agency with former police detective Hideyuki Makimura. When gangsters murdered Hideyuki, Ryō honored his dying wish to protect his sister, Kaori, who became Ryō’s new partner and emotional anchor. Their relationship evolves from mutual irritation to deep, unacknowledged romantic attachment, with Ryō concealing his feelings to shield her from danger. The manga implies their eventual marriage.

In *Angel Dust*, Ryō confronts his traumatic past involving Angel Dust, now weaponized into "ADM" nanomachines by the syndicate Union Teope, led by Kaibara ("Mayor"). The film reveals Kaibara’s obsession with Ryō as his "prodigal son" and the sole survivor of the original drug. Ryō’s investigation into assassin client Angie, seeking ADM, culminates in a duel where he is forced to kill her after ADM drives her insane. This conflict directly ties to Hideyuki’s death during earlier Angel Dust operations.

Key relationships define his journey: Kaori Makimura is his partner and emotional vulnerability; her safety is often exploited by enemies. Umibozu is a rival sweeper and former comrade from Central America, sharing a frenemy dynamic. Saeko Nogami is a police detective who frequently enlists Ryō’s help, incurring unresolved "favors." Reika Nogami, Saeko’s sister, harbors unspoken affection for Ryō but respects Kaori’s feelings.

Ryō suffers aerophobia stemming from his childhood trauma. He drives signature vehicles like the Mini Cooper and frequents shooting ranges for stress relief.
