Description
Nico Robin is the archaeologist of the Straw Hat Pirates and a former vice president of the criminal organization Baroque Works, where she operated under the code name Miss All Sunday. In the film One Piece: The Desert Princess and the Pirates: Adventure in Alabasta, she is introduced as a calm and mysterious figure who works alongside the antagonist Crocodile. Her background is defined by tragedy: she was born on the island of Ohara, a center for historical research, which was destroyed by the World Government in a massacre known as the Buster Call. As the sole survivor, she spent twenty years as a fugitive, unable to trust others and forced to rely on her wits and abilities to survive.

Robin’s personality is marked by composure, intelligence, and a dry, sometimes morbid sense of humor. She rarely displays strong emotions and approaches situations with a logical and analytical mindset. This reserved nature initially makes her appear aloof, but beneath the surface she is deeply kind and possesses a strong will to uncover the truth. Her primary motivation is to read the Rio Poneglyph, an ancient stone that contains the complete history of the world, including the forbidden Void Century. This drive stems from the legacy of her mother, Nico Olvia, and her mentor, Professor Clover, both of whom died in pursuit of the same knowledge.

In the film, Robin’s role shifts from antagonist to ally. She initially helps Crocodile manipulate the conflict in Alabasta, but she secretly opposes his plan to use an ancient weapon. After Crocodile betrays and attacks her, she saves Monkey D. Luffy from drowning and later provides him with the antidote to Crocodile’s poison. Her decision to join the Straw Hat Pirates comes after Luffy saves her from the collapsing royal tomb, an act that forces her to confront her own desire to live and find belonging. She asks to join the crew, and Luffy accepts without hesitation.

Key relationships in the film include her transactional partnership with Crocodile, which ends in betrayal, and her growing bond with Luffy, who treats her with trust and respect from the moment she asks to join. She also interacts with Nefertari Vivi, the princess of Alabasta, and demonstrates a quiet respect for Vivi’s dedication to her country. Flashbacks in the film reference Jaguar D. Saul, the giant who saved her as a child and taught her that she has the right to live, a lesson that resonates during her time in Alabasta.

Robin’s development in the film is the beginning of her transformation from a solitary survivor to a member of a crew she can call family. She starts as a guarded individual who sees others as tools, but her experiences in Alabasta open her to the idea of trust and companionship. This arc sets the foundation for her later growth into a more emotionally open and loyal member of the Straw Hats.

Her notable abilities come from the Hana Hana no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows her to sprout copies of any body part from any surface. She can generate multiple arms, legs, eyes, and ears at will, enabling her to perform combat maneuvers, restrain enemies, gather intelligence, and create physical barriers. In the film, she uses these powers to immobilize opponents, assist her allies in battle, and save Luffy from drowning. Her fighting style is precise and strategic, relying on her intellect and the versatility of her Devil Fruit rather than brute strength. Her bounty at the time of the film is seventy-nine million berries, a reflection of the threat she poses to the World Government as the only known person capable of reading Poneglyphs.
